Hello all, I recently bought a 1981 maxim xj550 with 17,000 miles for $300. I bought it under the condition that it needed work. Needed Carbs put back on, front master cylinder needs replaced or rebuilt, and the starter isn't working. I didn't think it was too bad of a deal. If i get it running I ride, If I don't I will part it out. Cosmetically it is real nice with no dents or scratches. I did find a couple of chips on the tank.

Wish I could talk more about the bike but, I have only had it two days.

I am 32 years old from Oxford Ga. If you would have asked me 3 months ago if I would ride a bike I would probably have laughed. I however have always viewed them as a work of mechanical art. I recently have been looking at some older Italian scooters. While I was in search I came across this jewel and thought why spend all that money on a scooter when I could ride a real bike. I have never ridden a street machine before. I did ride a friends dirt bike when I was a teenager. I plan on taking riding classes to get my license. The bike does seem a little big for me. I am only 5'7" and about 210lbs. I was looking at it and it looks like I could possibly lower it. Am I right about that?

Anyway I am glad to find this site and the respect that you have for the old XJ's. I love my bike so far. I look forward to having several good discussions here.

    Thanks for reading

Thanks. It is the one a guy in Loganville had on CL. Don't take this the wrong way but, I'm glad you have too many projects hehe. I plan on getting some pics on wednesday when the rain stops. My shop isn't all that big and is cluttered.

    thanks chipper and skillet.

cutlass, the bike actually came with a service manual, owners manual, a parts list slide and the one thing I was most excited about was the factory chain lock (I don't know why I would got so thrilled when I found it). I wish my funds would allow me to buy a big shop. I did find a 10X14 metal out building at i think it was home depot online for $400. figured this would be big enough to hold my four wheeler, bike and maybe the wood lathe once I put it on a rolling stand.

Nice, I've got a similar story behind my 550maxim, but it didn't look anywhere as nice as yours!

    Also, hello from Suwanee, Ga!
