I pulled off my front & rear wheels to get new tires and decided it was a good time to change the drive shaft oil on my XJ900. The lower drain plug was just a screw type plug. The upper fill plug had the magnet extension type plug in it (yes it had magnetic sludge on it...). To me this seems backwards. All the drawings I can find on the .net show the magnet on both the top & the bottom but the part numbers are different (except one web site showed them inverted).

I don't know the inside of the rear drive but does anyone know the proper placement for the two plugs before I put the new oil in?

Also can I flush the drive shaft with something before putting the new oil in (it's really thick).

I'd put the magnet in the lower hole, unless it contacts something when the wheel is turned...but it sounds like it's grabbing filings regardless...

I wouldn't try to flush it. Just let it go and refill it again after a few hundred miles...I change mine about 4 times a year, just because it's easy.

There should be two different plugs, one with a hex head and one with a allen wrench head. The plug with the hex head goes in the bottom(drain) and the allen head goes in the fill hole.

Thanks, the longer magnet plug fits fine in the lower drain port so that's where I'll put it. Your right it is pretty easy to change. I'll be changing the final drive oil much more frequently.

Welcome aboard! Could you please pm me.....I, along with Len Chacal of XJ4Ever, have been compiling a list of known XJ900's that were USA deliveries. PM me and I'll give you a list of the info points that I'd need to get you on to the registry.

    Thanks!
