Ok, so ill try to explain this the best i can. I have an 82 xj750 maxim that i am swapping the atari box gauges out for the smaller round version off the 82 xj750. :D however, when i went to plug it into the harness i realized the plugs attached to the ends of the harness and the gauges were identical. How do i wire them together? Because the colors dont match..

You need the two wiring digrams, trace each wire individually, then cut & splice to match, not difficult, just time consuming..........

You going to have a few things that aren't used on the round gauges. Like the stand, brake, batt, head, tail, fuel wiring for the warning lights.

The gauge lights will be another challenge as they were wired a bit differently on 82(Fishfinder) vs the 83(Round Gauges).

You need to look at both wiring diagrams to weed out everything.

Are they 82 750 maxim and seca wiring?

Regardless let me know models/years and I will see if I can help. Might take a few days since I won't be home much.

Also head to radio shack and get need male and female 9 pin connectors (or less after checking diagrams).

Please clarify what is a plain 82 xj750?

I know of maxims and secas for that year and size.

I'm no expert but have some paper and electronic manuals.

The extra wire in the middle position is a ground for the 82 750J.
The schematics are in the Haynes and are correct.
You do not need to hack the harness. You should be able to drop in the instruments. Something is amiss. Can you photograph the instrument cluster you are trying to install so we can verify the lineage?
Let's take this one step at a time and do it right.

    Generally speaking, a Maxim.

    '82 750 Maxim=XJ750J
    '82 750 Seca=XJ750RJ

Unless you're in another part of the world than the USA.

Most everywhere else, the "plain" XJwhatevers were "Seca" styled (because the Maxims weren't sold much anywhere else but here.)

    Ok cool.
Fyi you kept typing 82 not 83 for your replacement guages.

    Drools over shiny parts.

yeah, my mistake, i had too many numbers to remember. A.D.H.D is a b***h, especially for trying to remember specifics. But the gauges are definitely 83 and my bike is registered as an 82, but the frame says 83.. so..? is it like cars where they produce them 6 months ahead or is the year dead on?

No worries, you can edit your posts for up to three days after you post them.
I'll have to refer to my schematics to bone up on the 83 harness details. You can swap in an 82 650J to the 82 750J with no problems, we might have to talk (I gots an 82 650 set sitting at home).

You should not have to cut and splice wires to make the necessary changes. You can buy pin pushers for most connectors. You simply insert the device around the pin (or socket) and it folds the little holding "ears" flat. A push on the plunger at the top and the pin/plug slides out easily. Fold the ears back out and re-insert and you are in business.

Much cleaner and professional appearance when you are done.

You can find the tools at Radio Shack or at an electronics supply store such as Norvac Electronics.

    I had sent you a PM. I have both wiring diagrams, 82 & 83 XJ750.

Most every connection would be made up in the headlight bucket so you wont see them. The New Tach has a 4 wire plug(one more for the lights in it) where the Old Tach has a 3 wire plug since the lights were mounted inside the gauge housing.

You can find the replacement connectors you need at Vintageconnections.com or other suppliers.

They sell the pin extractor tool also, But I think I paid like $7 for it at electronics parts outlet here in Houston.

It was in '80-'83; and the lead time kept growing. Most '81 models were built in LATE 1980 (or even 1981) but by the 1983 model year, most of those had already been built in '82, as early as mid-year.

So; The build date may be "ahead" of the model year, sometimes by quite a bit. The situation becomes more complicated by the fact that some states allowed bikes to be titled as the year they were sold rather than by their actual "model year" or build date.

Best thing is to use your VIN and chacal's "VIN decoder" to see what you really have.

Wow, thats good to know fitz. Problem is part of my VIN is missing. :( the sticker peeled off in the center of it. I figured if i found the diagrams for these bikes i could determine mine and then rewire everything. (I want to move the "headlight bucket" to under the seat where my airbox was. That way it is out of the way and waterproof.) Has anyone done this?

Ok, so i decided to move most of the electrical components to the modified unused airbox. Im going to seal off the air hole in the front and then use the original lid to access it all. I also found a really great online store which is located pretty close to where i live, its TerminalSupply. I plan on buying all waterproof Delphi/packard pin connectors for my harness. :D
