I am wondering if the tanks are exactly the same between the different years for the the xj650's?

I have an 82 maxim 650 and want to know if an 80 or 81 tank is an exact replacement

I've never heard they weren't... I'm 90% certain it would fit.

as far as i know the 80,81,82, and 83 650 maxims are all the same. A 750 tank will also fit too

They are correct... 80-83 650 Maxim's are all identical, and 750 Maxim's as well (but 6 litres bigger).

And an additional 6 litres is a REALLY nice thing to have if you plan on doing any serious miles.

Its true, first thing I did with my 650 is put on a 750 tank, I find it looks better, plus it gives you better range

Thanks for clearing that up guys. Maybe I'll have to start looking for a 750 tank.
