g'day again, what would be a fair amount of time /miles would you expect a well maintained clutch to last ,the reason i ask is at the moment its looking likely i will get them from len here and the postage is the same for 1 or 2 cables,if i have a new cable is a spare needed, thanks

depends on how many miles you put on. I would figure a couple of years, mine was the stock and had been on there for about 20k miles, although it broke.

keep it lubricated and route it correctly, keep the sleeve from hit, dirt grime, you'll be good for couple years.

A spare is always a good idea.

My cluch cable broke on me durring the sumer, just got back from a long ride and was pulling into my driveway when it happened . I had a spare in my garage. As soon as I get some bags I'll keep one on the bike. You never know when one will break.

A friend of mine was stuck on the freeway with his throttle cable broken. So for any cable its a good idea to have a spare.

i've been fortunate enough as to never have a problem with a cable. but that don't mean they haven't been replaced at some point and time before i became owner.

i bought my 82 maxim 650 brand new. sold it around 90 with close to 50k miles and original cables.

About forever if properly maintained. If properly maintained.

Regularly (annually for me) flushed and lubed; inspected for worn-through spots in the sheath, etc.

I you START with a new cable then you can take care of it properly and really not have to worry. Unfortunately the original cable might not have been so lovingly cared for...

Clutch cable on my '81 just finished its second season with absolutely no signs of wear; it will probably last 50K miles or more as long as I take care of it.

i forgot to add ,when i discovered my new cable was 8"short i had to put my old one back on,with my new cable luber (after i worked out how to use it)it blew out a heap of black gunk and is much better to use even though it needs replacing.
