Been on here a while and read a ton of stuff, so if this has been posted before accept my apology....
Here's a link to a process that uses, of all things, Molasses to remove rust, check it out.

Not for someone in a hurry, but it's that time of year when time passes slowly anyway.

I'd be willing to try but my rusty ebay tank is wide open. (No cap, pet cock or fuel sender).

    Plastic baggies and duct tape?

I'm pretty keen on hanging a piece of re-bar in there and using a trickle charger to electro plate all the rust from the tank TO the piece of re-bar.

Chacal carries blanking plates you can cover the petcock and sender holes with.

Duct tape will dissolve almost immediately with almost anything.

I use that stiff, 'peel off the paper backing-type' aluminum furnace tape which holds up much better, even with gasoline and SeaFoam.

I tested this out on some rusty old nuts and bolts... works pretty well.

I read that ketchup was quite a metal cleaner too, with its acidic properties.

I tried the molasses thing early on.... it did help but getting the residue out is almost as bad as getting the rust out.......

Another product that I found works quite well is P.B.Blaster. I used it on a 25cal pistol that got lost in the snow one winter, found it next spring. Took it apart put it in a quart jar with P.B. let it sit for a couple of weeks,it was a little pitted but no rust, still shooting it. Also works to restore to a point O-rings& rubber seals. Used it alot in a sawmill as a millwright can be heated to break rusted large bolts loose. My .02. Great sight you have here have learned massive amounts of information on how to restore my bike THE RIGHT WAY! Many thanks to all.

    Hey Bob,

I'm not sure how big the sender hole is but for anything bigger then 1-1/2" I use plumbing wing plugs. For 1-1/2 and smaller I use corks. Go down to the local plumbing supply house, not a home depot or lowes since they won't have them. You can get wing plugs from 1-1/2"-10" and wrap one that might be a tad too small with duct or electrical tape to increase it's diameter before winding it up to tighten it. They are about 6 bucks each for a 2-1/2".

I tested it out on a banged up, too fargone gixxer tank. When done it was SHINY inside except at the top above the level of liquid and in the spots where the only thing holding it together was paint.
