It's not and it's a sham. Look carefully at the pics. That's NOT an "as stored-new" bike; it's a VERY CAREFUL restoration with a lot of NOS parts. The giveaway is the fact that some things are TOO perfect. I remember those bikes on the showroom floor; their polished cast parts weren't that polished. Like the bikes Wiz does, and my bikes, it's a little OVER done (no offense Wiz, but you know what I mean.) Our bikes are shinier than they came from the factory; that bike is too, in certain dead giveaway places.

It's very nice though; too bad the original bikes really weren't that nice.

Yeah, some of the clamps and other hardware are new-new; they just got installed and haven't "sunk in" to the rubber stuff they clamp, which they would have after that much time.

The front brake caliper and its weird cantilever support weren't originally polished to that degree, and neither were the forks; and there is a lot of other stuff that gives it away. The bike has 600+ miles on it; that should have created a blemish or two. T'ain't none, nowhere. It's TOO perfect.

I don't care how carefully it was stored or how meticulously it was cleaned, there should still be some residue in the "cracks" here and there, and there isn't. Anywhere. That bike was recently reassembled with new hardware. Very nice 100-point job; just NOT "as-stored new."

***EDIT*** It just sold for $25,101. Somebody bought a very nicely restored bike; methinks he paid a tad too much.

However, it is a 4-cylinder 4-stroke Jap bike and it just sold for over $25 Large. Yowzas.

Cant believe that sold that much. Great looking bike, but you could do the same for very less. I would think even if you had a "professional" do the restore to that degree it wouldnt cost that much.

Im wondering if the bike's miles are really that true or not.

Highly doubtful. The degree of fading of the instruments doesn't match, unless it's just the photography. Valve covers have been off.

That oil line down from the tank (lower RH) had a silver mesh cover on it to begin with; the black one is a current-market aftermarket piece commonly appearing in photos of "resurrected" bikes but not in original pics.

Well I hope the guy who spent the 25 grand didnt get scammed. That is an awful lot of money for something like that. The auction had bare minimal amount of information on it.

I agree that it does look too good. Oxidation does occur on anything, and cleaning buildup of dust and everything else seems like it would be too difficult to get that clean like you said.

On top of that, if the bike only had 600 something miles and was stored, are we supposed to believe that the bike was properly maintained, cleaned regularly, and taken care of like it was an archeological find without ever riding it?

No information was given even on how maintenance of gas within the bike. No gas in tank- moisture can build- rust can occur. Gas in tank- varnish buildup. I would think if you were to completely empty the bike of all gas, you would have to take the tank and carbs off and use some method or another to prevent rust and moisture buildup.

Time doesnt stand still, though it would seem this seller would have us believe so.

What is considered totally original? I mean to a point... Some thing has to be replaced no matter what. If intake boots would actualy last that long... It would be nice. With cars if some thing is replaced is that not considered original any more? I thought in the all original cars they were about every last bolt being the one that came with the car from the factory?

I am just wondering, if changing a part like a cable even with nos, is it still original?

He is stating it is on the video. He also says "The clocks are perfect. Not rebuilt, brand new."

It is a nice looking bike though. It makes me want to go an restore a bike.

I glanced at the ad but didn't look at the pictures. A buyer has to be SO careful when buying a "vintage" bike. There are so many wrong interpretations of what makes "new" or "original" that's it's very difficult to tell what you are bidding on unless you go and look at the bike. I have a couple of H2's in my collection and those bikes, as cheap as they were back in the day, are nearly worth their weight in gold today. One of them is an all original purple 75, the rarest of all models. I took a lot of time and walked from many many bikes before buying it. The biggest problems is that their are so many liars out there trying to take someones money and if the buyer is uneducated or lustful, he will get taken advantage of. Recently, a NOS Honda ATV sold....for very close to 50 grand! I shudder to think how the buyer would feel if he found that it wasn't NOS afterall....because there are plenty of sellers willing to lie to get that kind of money.

Buyer Beware has never been truer then in the field of vintage motorcycles!

My interpretation of "original" is evvverything is still there. It is exactly how it came out of factory. I think on the Barret Jackson auction last year there was a '69 Camaro with 17 miles on it. Everything was original, right down to the spark plugs, paint, air filter, tires, etc.

Replacing any part makes it no longer original parts I think. After that you can call it "restored like new"

    Just my opinion.

That's been my point all along. The bike is almost a 100-point restoration; I say "almost" because a true purist would knock him down for the "overdone" bits.

But it's a restoration. NOT "stored since new." The guy who paid $25Grand DID get scammed, if he honestly believes it's "all original." Sure, "the clocks are new" they're also NOT FROM THAT BIKE.

The usual "definition" of restoration uses repainting as its main barometer, replacing a part with a correct NOS part OR a better-condition same part from salvage generally doesn't generally make it "not original."

The only problem I have with this one is the claim of "stored since new" when it's obvious (and to more of us than just me) that it's a restoration; a very nice one, done using as many NOS parts as possible-- but a restoration.

As such, should the price be lower or higher than a truly just-unearthed relic?

Wow, I think this is the same bike. I mean no one can be certain, but I noticed some of the background. Even if it is a restoration I am sure anyone willing to pay that much knows better, but there willing to pay for it. This has been a very interesting post.

    that said.

Fitz, You bring up a good point. Would The price be lower or higher. I mean personally I would think the price should be lower. Realistically, There are some things that if I had the money I would over pay for. It comes down to what your willing to pay. I hope that who ever would spend that kind of money would get on a plane and check it out first. Every thing comes down to what some one els is willing to spend. Maybe the bike holds sentimental value, in that case it could be priceless.

I think it is interesting that some people would dislike this bike because of it being over restoration. I never thought of it like that. I guess in the restoration world from factory look is best. Even if from factory wasn't always top quality.

There were a couple of these at Bettencourts auction last year. I'm still kicking my own a$$ for not picking them up, they were cheap.

I agree with you i studied the pics looks the same to me. I find it hard to believe it has only 6 hundred miles the valve cover has been off no reason for that someone pointed that out earlier.

Take a look at the eBay copy again, Fitz. Nowhere does the seller claim the bike was "stored since new", only that it is "flawless", "as new", and has been "stored" (as opposed to having been ridden from time to time). Neither does the seller claim that the bike is "all original". In fact, in the YouTube video (absolutely the same bike for sure) the seller points out that one of the pipes has been replaced, and that the tires and clocks are new.
As for the valve covers having been removed, that was probably done to polish them and replace the 40+ year old gaskets. It does not necessarily indicate that the claimed mileage is bogus.
I'm pretty sure the buyer knew exactly what he was getting. Nobody plunks down 25K on a bike like this unless he is a serious collector who knows what's what. Kinda makes you wonder, though: How much would a truly original bike in this condition go for? You might be talking Desmosedici money.
