Since im back and forth with what to do with my 80 XJ650, thought i'd go back threw some of the post's on the site, and i guess im gonna bob my bike now.

I curious about one thing though, and that is the battery that sit's in front of the tire, anybody ever try putting the battery in somthing that looks like an oil tank, so to hide the battery, which would look pretty cool IMHO.

wouldn't be too hard to do if you were ditching the stock airbox and going with pods. however if you wanted to keep the airbox it wouldn't work.

I was bobbin around the idea of a PVC intake system with possibly a single pod sticking out of each side.

I like that idea, you might have to re-jet, but it should look ok.

    Actually, I believe a lot of folks have-- it's a common "chopper" mod, here's something similar: http://www.tcbroschoppers.com/internati ... ucts_id=33

How about an Ammo Can, placed sideways, 4 intake runners go into it, the battery is in there, along with the untidy electricals, and you glue a flat filter to the bottom surface??

Kill 6 birds with one stone!!

The question I always have about bobbers is:

Where do you carry the beer? (Or other cool refreshing beverages...)

Hey Fitz, haven't you ever heard of a beer run? People on bobbers would rather ride from bar to bar, beer cost more but their's plenty of ladies to look at.

Ha. The bars people ride bobbers to might have plenty of females there, but hardly any ladies...

If there ever was such a thing as a perfectly good bike, I'd bet the farm that it's not 30 years old.

Well i got the bike just for the reason of bobbing it. This is my very first bike ever, but not my last. Infact i plan to get a sporster as my next bike, and have this bike as a toy since it is 30 yrs old and not sure how long parts will be avalible for it.

Make the bike how you want it. There's no such thing as a stock bike that will fit/please everyone. Stock sucks anyways. There's always room for improvements on any stock bike. Go for it!!

That being the case, I would get it running 100% and get some saddle time logged before you start cutting up the bike and possibly create a machine that will detract from your initial learning experience. You don't yet know what "fits you" you don't have anything to go by.

Stock motorcycles are designed the way they are for reasons, not the least of which is SAFETY. Take some time and learn to ride it before you hack it up; you don't want to "personalize" it into an unpleasant experience.

I'm only offering this advice because I've seen it happen time and again.

I agree with bigfitz52. Ride, ride, ride! get to know it and once you gain experience you will know what you like and don't like about it. I see way to many Soldiers that want a chopper, or bobber and realize after buying one that it doesn't feel right to them. At least go through a set of new tires, hwy, city and back roads.

Oh ya, first ride the crap out of it...then, cut, grind, remove parts, weld stuff and replace parts with better ones, etc.
Maybe you'll even like it as is!!
