no no im kidding, i dont ride fast. actually i dont really ride at all, as its cold as all heck and raining here. so here is my problem:

the front wheel is loose, as in it can wobble sideways. i tightened up the castle nut, and it tightened up some, but is still loose. i know usually you cannot "tighten" too hard onto wheel bearings, so my REAL question is:

do i need to replace wheel bearings or is there a common problem with these that requires replacing something else i.e. washers and such?

    any help is greatly appreciated.

When you tighten the castle nut have the axel clamp nuts loose (at the bottom of the fork leg) if that doesn't sort it & the spacer & speedo drive are in place, it must be bearings, but seems odd.

With the front wheel off the floor, put 1 hand on the top of the wheel and one at the bottom. Push away from you with one hand and pull towards you with the other. Now swap and push in the other direction. You are trying to rock the wheel. Feel for movement as you change direction.

If it does rock - the bearings require replacement.

    Actually, ....

You are supposed to apply a good-deal of Tightening Torque ( 50 Ftlbs or more) to the Axle Nut.

The Bearing gets protected against over-tightening by the arrangement of SPACERS on the Axle which keep the Wheel TRUE and limit Run-out.

The problem you are having may be that you do not have the Axle TIGHT enough!

how bad is the looseness. is it flat out bad to warrant bearings or just slightly indicating axle nut tightness.

it's possible that the wrong axle bolt might be installed. as in too small a diameter where it fits inside the tire.

i beleive the bearings are pressed in. with the races. if the damage is that bad. double check the rim. you might be in need of a whole different rim instead of just the bearings.

the bearings might have heated up to the races. so the races themselves are spinning inside the rim. thus a damaged rim.

I am thinking along with Rickomatic... your missing spacers and need to be put in place.. Should be a axle into fork tube, steel spacer on opposite side of said fork tube, then the wheel, along with the speedo drive then fork tube, washer and nut and new cotter pin.

hope that doesnt confuse anyone... What was the question again??

The LEFT Side Spacer is a sneaky little devil.

It will come-off with the wheel and stay where it belongs.

Then, when you move the wheel someplace, ... it falls out.

Or, when the PO moved the wheel someplace, it fell out... long, long ago and far, far away...

    Check the fiche.

    I said "LEFT" ...

That would be the LEFT if you were in front ... looking back.

I meant the Left if your were sitting on the bike, backwards.

It would be the RIGHT if you were sitting on the bike the right-way.
