I've got the diagram for a 1982 Yamaha XJ 650 RJ Seca. I don't know if it is any different from the maxim, but here you go.

Edit: Nevermind, I found the link where I got mine: http://members.tripod.com/dave_jack/id39.htm

This guy's site has lots of cool stuff.

The XJ650RJ diagram he has there is really fuzzy on my system and just as fuzzy after I printed it out.

I found mine which are complete and clear. I'll try and scan the XJ650RJ ones in tomorrow using the legal size color scanner at work and post them tomorrow night. I'll also post the reference number page as well.

Besides, I need something large and colorful to print out of the plotter to keep it from clogging up. ;-)

Sorry if someone was trying to download the large ones earlier. I had to reboot my firewall.

If people could not hit the large ones until later tonight (10pm+ CST) or between 3pm and 5pm CST I'd really appreciate it.

(A new OpenBSD firewall is high on my list of priorities.)

Hey guys, I am getting ready to do a complete custom/digital wiring set up on my XJ 650 J. Before I started though, I wanted to have a really good wiring diagram to work with, a good map so to speak before the journey.

So, I made a wiring diagram in Autocad that is color coded (lines are the color of the wires) instead of just labeled and because it's in autocad, you can print it as large as you like. Very helpful to have a 36in by 48in wiring diagram. Anyway, shoot me a note if anyone needs a copy.

Just FYI - if you put this out of a plotter you may have problems with the color+stripe lines if the plotter is misconfigured. Thankfully wdenny has labeled the wires properly so there is very little confusion.

He also was kind enough to lay out the connector plugs too!

I think nimitz has covered that, because of the fact that it is a .dwf or a .dxf, sometimes, printers do funny things with it. My CanonS250 cerca 2000 can chew them up and spit them out, but my New hpc1200c gets stuck everytime.

Lucky FOR YOU!!! I have a copy of ADOBE Premium at work and it will let me print it from autocad to a .pdf with the layers intact... so shoot me your email or however you feel safe trading on the web, and I'll send one out on Friday when I get in.

Depends entirely on what you want to do or need to do. What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Is there a problem with the bike or are you trying to do a conversion?

    More data would be helpful.

    *thinks for a bit*

Let's see....tail light/brake light, turn signals, maybe kickstand switch...

There shouldn't be too much back there to wire and most of it is up top.

You can see the turn signal wires in my under seat pics:

(No comments on paint yet please. That will come this summer. ;-)

The starter solenoid? A couple of quick things come to mind right off the bat:

    1) Have you done the fuse box replacement yet?

    2) Did you pick up a Haynes or a Clymer manual for the bike yet?

I'm at the office right now but when I get home tonight I can probably dig into the troublshooting for that stuff. Also you can post on the XJ Chat portion of the forum with your problem and there's almost certainly a lot more people that can help. (This is provided you haven't done so already - I didn't check.)

There's also an XJ CD that you can buy (check the sticky topics in XJ Chat) but that will likely not get to you in the timeframe you said you needed to have the bike running by.

Regardless you came to the right place - if anyone can help you get it running it would be this group. :)

Well a couple of pointers from a guy who's done his own wiring for a number of years now... (17+ years I/T work plus owning a lot of rustbuckets that I needed to re-wire.) ;-)

    1) Take your time and label EVERYTHING until you're comfortable. Tan masking tape and a ballpoint are your friends.

    2) If you know how to do it properly - solder instead of crimp. At least for permanent connections. Much more stable.

    3) Get yourself a simple multimeter - even the $10 ones at Ace Hardware or somewhere similar will be fine to start out with - and make sure all grounds are ground and all voltages are voltages. Never the two should be reversed.

    4) Heat-shrink-tubing is also your friend and should be on your list if you can afford some of it along with your electrical tape.

Like I said before - let us know what's going on and I'm sure we can get you up and running. :)

Totally agree with nimitz on this one. Some things are just not worth it to ... "half @$$" (can i say that on xjbikes? apologies in advance if not). Take your time, check it twice and do it right the first time. Then, you won't have those 8 hour nights with Mr. Folgers and your multimeter. (quote from my 1950 Chevy rebuild).

If you aren't sure, ask first before you wire it up.. save yourself the time and frustration.

    No biggie.

My first running ride is also my current one:

I didn't get all the things done this winter that I wanted done thanks to that annoying thing known as life but I have her on the road and for the moment that's enough. :D

Do you have spark on the other two cylinders?

Swap the coils and see if the spark moves to the other two cylinders.

If it does then it's likely the one coil. If it doesn't move then it's the wiring or the module.

There's not too much involved in the ignition:

    Coils
    Ignition switch
    Module
    Fuse block

I would do wiring in this order if I had to restore cut wiring on the bike:

    1) Replace fuse box. This eliminates the false diagnosis of a circuit not getting power.

    2) Check the wiring of the ignition switch to make sure power is getting to the ignition circuit.

    3) Check the coils to make sure they are both good.

    4) IF and only IF both coils are good then look at the module and the wiring going to the coils.

I have a Seca so the wiring diagram might not be the same but it's here if you want it:

Click on the ones that have 1024 in the name as the others are too big to load easily.

the ignition is getting power. But we think it could be a wiring problem.

That's why I suggested swapping the coils because that will tell you immediately if only one side is getting power/signal or not.

If it's the big honking 8" headlight then it's just a bulb. I'm not sure if the 7" is sealed or not but I don't think so.

If it's the replacable bulb (a H9004 I think) then any auto parts store should have one. If it's the sealed beam a parts store may or may not have it but you could likely get it though Old Bike Barn:

In the order I would look:

Fuse, fuse panel, kill switch, kickstand switch, neutral safety switch, ignition switch, ignition module.

Gotta be one of those I would think. Can't quite see anything else in my head that would stop the coils from firing.

Check them in order. If all are good then either it's a nasty shorted/open wire somewhere very very odd (which you should in theory find when checking all those items with a voltmeter) or the bike is haunted.

If it's haunted then you'll have to call a priest or something because I can't help you there. ^_^

If it is indeed the module then you can get them a few places. Notably E-Bay has one every so often. Old Bike Barn, etc. Click the links section off of the lefthand menu. The 2nd and 3rd links are list of new and used parts sources.

And I'm sure someone else will chime up and let you know where to find a deal on one.
