Thought you guys might enjoy a pic of an XJ650 with a sidecar attached.

The gentleman in the photo is Lonnie Cook of Northwest Sidecars, LLC, Boise, ID. Not sure which model sidecar is attached.

    Enjoy.

'80 or '81 XJ650? Motor looks kind of big. No "YICS" on the case, so pre 1982?

    I think 1980.

+ I think that is New Yamaha Black - 1980 color.

+ In 1981 they added "650" to the side cover badge below the word Maxim. I think we'd be able to see the 0 behind his leg if it had the 81 or later badging.

I'd guess 80-81. And the owner's manual CLEARLY states that this model is not designed to be used with a sidecar or a trailer. What a maverick! (Or he lost his owner's manual!)

I'm thinking '80 or '81 too. Interesting that the owners manual says no go for a hack. The guy really seems to know his stuff when it comes to offering sidecar advice. From a displacement and HP perspective it would seem that they were putting sidecars on much smaller bikes in the day. So that would leave lack of suitable hard mounting points. Experience and fabrication skills would overcome these issues. Clutch/brake issues? Clutches seem to be pretty strong on these bikes as we don't see many failures. Brakes? They have to be better than they were in the 20's!

The SC must be a nice light model. Mine is a pig at 295 lbs. Likely not suitable for the Maxims!
