Hi, my name is Zach and I'm new to the forum but not to XJ bikes! I just picked up my second 82 Seca 650 and she should be on the road by next week :)

I picked this gem up from an older gentleman in Kansas. 4800 original miles. It even has the original toolkit and chainlock in place. It has a ding in the tank and the carbs are pretty gummed up. My mechanic is going through the carbs and adding some original looking front blinkers and mirrors. It had an awful looking faring on it when I got it that came off immediately. I can't wait to get this thing on the road!

    Welcome,

It's a good looking find. Make sure you hold on to that fairing, you may hate it but someone else may be looking for 1.

Since it sounds like someone else is doing the work, have them check the REAR BRAKE for delamination before you do any riding. It has to come apart and be physically inspected you cannot tell by pedal "feel."

This is truly important, you could wind up on your butt: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html this will give you an idea of the problem...

Thanks for the heads up on the delamination! My bike has been sitting less than a year but I'm sure that it still has the stock pads back there. I'm glad I know this now! I will have my mechanic go ahead and check it while he's doing the carbs.

I really think your gonna like the bike .Its very hard to find almost a new bike that old. Keep an eye on it for a few thousand miles make sure everything is working properly and you should be good for a long time. I would get your valves checked soon also better safe then sorry

VALVES were supposed to be checked initially at 3000, betcha they weren't.

Check/adjust the valve clearances, don't take a chance on a motor that fresh.

AFTER the valves have been checked, do a compression test.

My mechanic has informed me that the bike is running perfectly and he's waiting for some turn signal stalks. She should be ready to hit the road next week after I pull the back wheel off and check the pads. I'm not going to feel comfortable till I do. I think I'm also going to check the valve clearance within the next few hundred miles just to be sure. I can't wait to ride it, I will post some new pics after I get her back and get her cleaned up.
