Lowering the rear end that much (2 1/2") will severely limit handling and ride quality. You could remove the seat and just sit on a 1" foam pad covered with leather - that would lower the seat to about the same as 10" shocks.

If you are still set on going with 10" shocks you should get ones with much heavier duty springs so you are not bottoming out on every bump (do that and you might as well go hard-tail). None of the Progressive Suspension shocks come that short (11" is the shortest IIRC). You could try one of the Harley Dyna 10" aftermarket shocks but you will probably need to swap the shock bushings for ones that fit your bike.

You don't want honda rebel shocks. The spring rate is way to low your gonna hit you fender.Type in motorcycle shocks on ebay They have lengths on a lot of them. I think you can get sportster shocks in 10 in Its gonna ride like a hardtail

ok, suzuki savage shocks are 10.5, as are rebel shocks, I bought brand new re pop honda rebel shocks for 65... no ride time on these shocks yet, but seem fine.. it should be noted i have a single seat bobber, i dunno how rebel shocks would like a passenger..

I put a set of Suzuki Savage shocks on my bike. I'm right at 200lbs. It handled fine (for me  ) and no bottoming out. Can't say how it would work for more than just 1 person...

What do you guys think of cutting the springs down 1.5 inches. I saw a guy do that in a different thread.

PainterD said that he cut an inch out of his shocks, which dropped his bike 2", but i prob would'nt cut anymore than that from a 25 to 30 yr old spring.

I've got a set of 10.5" Suzuki Savage shocks on my '85 XJ700. I'm about 170lbs, and have never bottomed them out yet.

I like the way the bike rides with the shorter shocks, seems like it's better planted on the road. Lower center of gravity I suppose.

Also anyone know a company that fabricates or sells just a strut to replace the shocks instead? I have no welding experience but am looking to lower/hardtail my 81 Maxim 650 I just picked up...any suggestions about that?

I had solid struts on mine and hated it. It didn't take very long to find out it's way too rough with no suspension in the rear for my...rear!
Oh I suppose if you ran on smoooooth streets and watched for potholes (almost impossible to miss all of them) you might get by without shocks. It's just that one or two good solid bumps are all my back could take before I had to go into traction!

you forgot to mention pebbles or the stripes in the road. you can feel them also reflectors on the road will make you walk funny. But if he makes his own he won't have much invested and he can see what we are saying

I got my shocks apart using some ratchet straps. Thanks everybody for your help. Well I was so excited to start cutting them down. After I got them cut and started putting them back together I realized both shocks are pretty much junk. Push the rod down and nothing. So I pretty much need new shocks anyways. I got them on the bike and I really like how it sits now. Now debating on lowering the front.

Your going to lose a bit of the "plush" ride when cutting the springs, but you will keep yourself from ending up walking funny after getting off the bike!
Stuts maybe the answer for some, but not for me is all I'm saying. Go ahead and put some on your bike and see if you like them. It's nice to have options.

Sorry, no specifics... I just read on this forum that Savage shocks would do the trick, and then started searching ebay. I bought the first set of 10.5" shocks I found from a Savage that were reasonably priced. The only specifics the seller listed was the shock size, and that they were from a Suzuki Savage.

Just remember when buying used Jap bike shocks off eBay that there's a really good chance they're going to be just as "all done" as what you're replacing.

MOST of the shocks that came on Jap bikes, especially "lower end" models, like the Suzuki Savage or Honda Rebel, were junk to begin with like the KYB's that came on most XJs, and will be completely trashed by 6000 miles or so.
