What's used to replace the footpeg covers on XJ650's?

As a lot of you guys know, I recently finished my '82 650 Turbo. Bike runs great but I still have a couple of minor details to complete. One of them is replacement of the stock foot peg covers for the rider not the pillion. The pegs themselves are perfect but the rubber is nearly completely destroyed on both sides. It looked as if the previous owner had ridden while standing, ALL the time! Then I began looking around and saw that the rubber covers just don't don't seem to wear very well and most are shot by now, even those for sale on fleabay.

I found stock replacements for 17ea plus shipping, if they really have them. I didn't know whether there was an accepted fix or replcement that most guys were using to replace the stockers. If you replaced yours, please let me know what you decided to use, I'd appreciate it.

I sold mine to another XJ Biker, but you can use almost any front footpeg of the correct dimentions in the mounting area. If the pivot pin is riveted, you need to drill it. Others have a convenient cotter pin, and swap away.

Why not simply replace the rubbers with the correct parts?

    From XJ4Ever's catalog, page 5:

OEM and aftermarket molded rubber FOOTREST PADS perfectly replace the worn, torn, rotted, or missing originals pads. Tread pattern is similar to the original.

HCP3056 OEM front (driver) rubber footrest PADS, fits either right or left side, for all XJ550 and all XJ650 models. Each: $19.95

HCP252 Aftermarket front (driver) rubber footrest PAD, fits either right or left side, for all XJ550 and all XJ650 models. Very nice reproduction of the original. Each: $13.95

Thanks guys....I was trying to limit any further investment in this bike. I could wrap them in duct tape for now but it would probably be dangerous in the rain and wouldn't go with the rest of the bike since there are very, very few imperfections<LOL>...just teasing.

As always, I do appreciate the input!!

After giving us the description of them, you tell us you'd wrap them in duct tape?!?!?!? I think I know which condition would look worse!!!!! Hey, seriously.... just order a new set of them. They are not that much, or you could wait out a pair on ebay, too. Either way, for minimal cost it will look MUCH nicer and you will be MUCH happier.

Within the past year, I purchased all new footpeg rubbers from a nearby Yamaha dealer. He had them in stock and the prices were reasonable.
Previous to that, I used "Goop" to rebuild a set of footpeg covers.

That "Goop" is amazing stuff. Don't know how we lived without it.
    Hope this helps. Jack

Thanks guys...never though of Hockey tape....I used to wrap my sticks back in the old days.....because they were made of wood, don't imagine that's the case anymore.

Cutlass, I really haven't looked too hard since I have just removed them, cleaned the brackets and reinstalled...btw- NEVER do that on the turbo model if you've already reinstalled the turbo and collector...had to enlist smaller hands then mine to get the nut started. I just know that the rubber is shot but I think that it's a straight threadless rivet type deal.

Goop, Hoogie....yes, I actually have a whole tool box dedicated to tubes of this and that. I always know where my threadlock, gasket maker, gasket sealer, supper guy, magic metal, liquid metal, J&B....etc is.

You know something Jam, in this day of purchasing online, I never even thought about going to the dealer. The last time I was in the dealers building was to buy shields for one of my helmets, the time before was to buy my Vstrom....in 07<lol>. I'll give them a call...

Thanks for checking but as I metioned in the first post, I already found them for 16.95...free shipping....I had thought before the shipping was extra but it's not.

Im going to stop at the dealer on the way home today depending on the weather. I woke at 3:15 and looked outside, nothing....took my shower, had my coffee and walked out the door at 4:03 and there was ealisy 1-1/2" on the road! Wow! I drove the beast today instead of the car...as I go closer to DC, it all turned to rain.

no problem . I guess your a real biker driving in the cold and when there is snow on the road and rain you are a glutton for punishment lol Hats off to you Jeff maybe its just because i live in the south. Last time i rode to work when it was under 50 degrees (before retirement) was when i first got my v max the only reason i did because it was new to me and i Didn't have a bike for about 8 years before that. of coarse i moved To atl from Daytona where i lived for 22 years prior burr don't like the cold. Especially when there is a perfectly good svt lightning in the driveway with great heat and a nice stereo. With the storm headed up your way be careful on the way home before the severe weather and wind get there

I'm not crazy Cutlass...the "beast" is my 99 Expedition, not a bike! Only rode once in the snow.....left 3 trails being me, one for the tires and one on each side as I dragged my feet. I was 3-4 miles from home when I woke up at a strangers house after partying all night many years ago.....I wandered outside to a winter wonderland, hopped on my bike and slipped and slid all the way home...and went to bed!!
