Glossary of Terms

How about starting a glossary of terms that novice wrenchers can refer to, so we don't get post that says "it won't turn over, I think it's the plugs"

 

Well, to start off we'll maybe have to do something like this for forum users on different continents.
IE: Wrench = spanner :idea:

Didn't we already defeat the "wrench=spanner, biscuits=crackers, crackers=insane" dragon a while ago?

Wiz, I agree 100%. Valve cover gaskets regularly get referred to as "head" gaskets, people often say they "did a valve job" when they did an adjustment, etc.

It would save a lot of confusion I'm sure.

I'd like a good explanation of "top heavy" as compared to just saying a bike is heavy or hard to push around.

I'm all for this. Wish I could help, but I'm one of the novice's not knowing what term is used for what.

We (you) should also take into consideration that the Haynes manual refers to certain parts differently and that is a point of confusion for us noobs

Unobtainium: parts that are no longer manufactured or replicated, SUCH AS Yamaha 5-valve carb covers, or Seca 550 right side covers.

No, I agree it's a good idea. HOW exactly to pull it off is different; if we do it in a thread, it will just grow and grow and the original poster will have to go back and keep editing it.

Which is fine, I guess; I'm a bit busy to be consistent with it however; so...

We could start with a "copy/paste" of the online glossary you linked to; but it will be a bit huge, kind of like Len's catalog (or one of my how-tos.)

I'm completely on board with the idea though; we just had a case of the "turn over" vs. "firing" thing a few days back.

Hey, that was me! Sorry about that. Maybe it's pure self interest, but I would like to be saved from future embarrassment with a glossary.

What might work is for some of the more experienced guys to start a Google document together. This makes it so a whole new post won't have to be created every time there are little edits or additions, they can just insert them into the original document.

Then, after there is a solid list going it can be posted to the forum for updates and additions. This might cut down on some chatter regarding more basic ideas like: "turn over" vs. "firing". and certainly shorten the length of the whole thread.

If this is the route, I'd be happy to get it going and work to keep it clean & alphabetized and what not.

Heres a funny but true. Reubens Barrichello was interviewed on "Top gear" and Jeremy Clarkson asked him about "A brazillian". Reubens replied "We call it a "Hitler"!!!

 

So not sure what people thought about the idea of a google doc for the initial glossary, but I went ahead and created one. If this sounds good PM me and with an email and I'll add you as an editor.

Put an addendum for XJ650RJ owners to love and cherish the 8 inch headlight and guard it with their life haha. Replacements are almost non-existent

Odd. One person already edited it. The link above is a little different than the last one I posted, but they both worked for me. If these still don't work I'll think of something else.
