ok so I usually build wheelers......jeeps toyota etc... but ive been laid off for over a year now and have sold three project trucks two toyotas and a jeep comanche. I was pretty bummed out, when a buddy of mine says" buy a cheap bike and build a bobber like me its cheaper then a wheeler". So here i go. I bought and ugly 1980 xj650 maxim for 50 bucks off some guy on craigslist. After a couple weeks of searching the web i found this place with tons of info.... enough talk on too the pics.

[IMG] right after i bought it. it had sat with out any plugs in it since 1994 with 90k on it.

[IMG] started stripping it down and but my free 1974 tl125 bars on

then started cutting the frame to lower the seat.

got some tubing to stretch out the back bone so its like a normal bike....what ever normal is.

and this is a mock up with a honda tl125 tank and solo seat i picked up for ten bucks.

Had to junk the motor cuz it was trashed the pistons were pretty much part of the cylinders now. This build is going to be budget minded so any feed back would be greet. Is there any one on this site i could send my wiring harness to, to have it minimalized to only able to pretty much start the bike charge the battery and have a head light and tail light? Thanks

Looks (need BIGGER pics  ) like a good job of mounting the tank and lowering seat rails. Tank looks good on there too. Use the "search" option at the top of the page for minimum wiring (don't know how to hyper-link). There's a diagram floating around. Good Luck with your build  !!!

    Yamirider,
Your probably better of starting from scratch with the wiring harness instead of trying to make sense out of the stock wiring diagram. There's about 10 miles of wire in these bikes and about 5 miles of it you can eliminate and still have enough to get the job done.
Do a search and get the minimal wiring diagram that someone has posted. That will get you running and you can add what ever you need from there.

seat mock up and I cut the shock springs and moved them forward

seat mount finish and had to use the springs on the seat to raise me up a couple inches or could easily hit the rear tire if I hit a bump hard enough

mocking up rear fender to the swing arm

just finish it so it does not look like most of the others make it you own. The thing with a bobber they all look the same see if you can do something different so it doesn't look like the rest. When they paint them flat black the only difference between them is the different fender. If your talented enough to weld the frame up. I know you have the talent to make it 1 of a kind. I mean no harm to anyone . But weather you do a 650 maxim or a 250 honda when its flat black with a single seat they look the same just a different motor and wheels . There are some really nice ones on here but there are a bunch that people have done that all look the same if you parked them side by side you would think it was a production bike

I definatly see what your saying and thats what im going for is different i've taken ideas of others i've seen on here like lowering seat rails, making a one piece back bone and using the stock rear fender. but other then that im tring to be different as for flat black I think its stupid, I always like to be different in any thing I do so I dont look like the guy standing next to me some where. Thanks for the input
