I finally got some front signals on my xj650j. Now the tail light comes on with the ign switch, (headlight always did). signals blink until switch is returned to center. Does this sound correct? This is my first yamaha.

The headlight should come on only when the engine is started. It will remain on until the key is turned off, even should the engine stall.

The signal operation sounds correct to this point. They will turn off if the switch is centred or if you ride a predetermined distance.

Not quite. The stock turn signal system will flash until "cancelled" either by pushing the button straight in at the center position or by the automatic canceller; it operates only when the bike is moving but I still haven't quite figured out the time/distance parameters.

The automatic canceller is defeated by most electronic flasher units and/or removal of the original speedo ass'y (which contains the "motion-sensor" reedswitch.)

You're correct about the headlight, although in some models it comes on with the key (not relay-operated.)

Thanks for the replies. I wondered if the turn sig sw was defective since it seems a little goofy. Didn't know about the "centered push in to cancel" feature. The way I have been turning it off from "RT" is to sw "LFT'' then center. I will try the push in thing. All is original as far as I know. I need to find an ''owners manual'' for it . I would like to understand it's possible features. I have the green covered "news print" repair manual....don't remember the brand. Info may be in it.
People keep asking me when I am going to sell it ......sure is hard to let go of a bike that cranks and runs everytime. I may even go into the forks and get the spongyness out of them. I know they don't hold that air head very long though no oil is on the tubes above the seals. Progressive springs worth the cash? Heck...I'm even starting to like that huge seat!
