I have an XJ650G and am planning on completely going through the carbs. Have read much info on this site about it and was wondering what parts I should replace while I have them apart so I can get them on order. Have seen rebuild kits for them but don't know if it comes with ALLl the parts I should replace. Also I am at just under 3500 ft elevation and wonder if I should look in to re-jetting for this. If so, how much and which jets?

I know it seems like a great idea to order all the parts before you take the carbs off, but here's the problem.

No matter what, you will have some piece that you will need that you did not order, unless you order EVERYTHING for all 4 carbs, and that would just be ridiculous.

Go ahead and study the How-To's and the manuals, get them off, take them apart, be organized, and make a list.

Otherwise you will end up with the same wait time, and double shipping plus items you may not need.

If I were you I would replace the throttle shaft seals also. I didnt and it came back to bite me in the butt.

Yes, I don't want to order all of the parts..just the ones that you should replace while they were apart. Wasn't sure if that's what a rebuild kit contained or if there were other parts not included in the kit that would be recommended to replace. Thanx for the input

Just acquired the bike and it needs some love. Rode it home and it ran fairly good. First XJ for me so don't have anything to compare to (my last bike was an 89 Suzuki Katana 600 I purchased new). Right muffler had a hole in it and was cracked. This is a project bike for me and I have it tore down pretty far right now. Lot's of cleaning and polishing ahead! Taking it down to the frame to either paint or powder coat. So....am working on exhaust, valves, brakes, ring/cylinder check etc..Have time and motivation. You can tell the bike has not been taken care of by it's previous owners. Now she's found a home and I intend to take good care of her..LOL..Anyways want to make sure carbs are good while I have it apart. Decided to go the whole nine yards on them but wanted to get some input on the parts I SHOULD replace while they are apart. Any suggestions appreciated. Just want to get it right the first time!

Well gunner, seeing as you have the bike torn down pretty far I'd suggest you take day7's advice. It's not like you just need to rebuild the carbs over the weekend so you can get back on the road.
So strip them down using the info found on this forum and replace only what's needed. If you are not sure at that point, then snap some pics, or post the concerns you have then and we'll try and point you in the right direction, but asking us to guess what you might need is kinda hard to do.

Doesnt really sound like you need anyone to tell you what to do then, do it all do it once and enjoy the ride. If your asking if floats go bad no just the normal wear and tear stuff shaft seals, float valve, check jet needle for wear and needle jet for elongation, new seal for pilot screw, bowl gasket. Order from Chacal click on xj4ever at top right of page. You might find parts cheaper but you get what you pay for and you will not find faster service and a more knowledgeable person on this planet.

Thanks for the info all...there is a wealth of info on this site and am glad I found it. More importantly...am going to USE it. Maxim-x, guess I should have been a little more clear...wasn't asking for anyone to guess..was just wondering if the rebuild kits are worth buying and what you should just automatically replace if you tear them down. Looked at the list of parts available for the carbs and it's overwhelming. Was hoping to see something like.."if you are going to rebuild your carbs right...here are the parts you absolutely want to replace". Will check the jet sizes and see if they are stock. Still wondering about my elevation of 3500 ft. The bike is stock and overall in good condition. Thanks all for the input. It is greatly appreciated.

If your going to freshen everything up you really wont be able to tell how your bike will run at elevation till you put her back together as its not going to be the same setup you had. I am at sea level here in California but dont have any problems crossing the mountains or riding in the mountains at Yosemite park and im pretty sure thats well above 3500

Thanks Waldo. I figured I would do just that and see how she runs when things are in good working order.
