I recently crumpled the exhaust on my maxim x after a not so friendly meeting with a guardrail at 90km/h so i am looking to replace it. i have seen a few mac exhausts on maxim x but their site no longer shows for the 85 maxim x 750. so my question to you fellow XJ riders is which MAC full exhaust system will fit the 85 X 750 or is there another brand. thanks

Jumping in on this thread, cause I'm in the market myself andI looked at the MAC site listed above junkmn, is it necessary to have the crossover pipe when doing after market exhaust?

Not really. While they may in most cases physically exchange, they are NOT all the same by any stretch, and mounting can differ greatly.

Some of the systems use a crossover-pipe setup; some are collector-box based. They don't exchange "gracefully."

With my Hindle system it has four formed pipes that all join into a collector (like the MAC system), from there it goes into a Mid-pipe and then finally a slip on "Can" (exhaust).
From the collector back it's held together with springs on hooks. This is how the pipe is held onto the flange with a (rusty) spring.

I contacted the vender at Mac and asked them a while back they said it wouldn't fit don't know if i was getting blown off or not. I bought a used 4-1 off a member on here for mine. It came off an x looks like maxim-x hindle. I trial fitted it what a pain you have to stretch the tubes to get around the frame and again to get it on the studs. Not looking forward to putting it on after frame is painted.

Hey cutlass, do you still have the pipes mounted? If you do then maybe you could use a piece of plywood and some exhaust clamps to hold the pipes at the right dimensions. Kinda hard to explain without a drawing or a picture, but if you take say a piece of plywood that spans the four pipes while the pipes are still on the bike and then get four standards exhaust clamps,, drill holes in the plywood and then slip the clamps over the pipes and secure them to the plywood. Then remove the pipe as a complete unit. Does that make sense or do I sound like I'm rambling?
After the painting you should be able to put the pipes back on without trying to stretch them around the frame tubes.
OK, this may look a little lame, well, a lot lame, but the white stripe is the piece of plywood and the dots are the nuts from the clamp pictured on the left. So locate this contraption so that it clears the frame when you go to take the clamps off.
Just had a thought, if you put this contraption on your pipe and locate it a bit higher than the wonderful rendering in the picture, then you should be able to loosen the clamps a bit and slide it down til everything lines up, maybe.

Thats a good idea but the pipes are not mounted the bike its all ready for paint. I don't think it will be 2 bad with 2 people. If need be i can use a ratchet tie down to pull the center pipes in to clear the frame. After i paint the pipes i hopefully won't scratch them up. Before i put them on i need to pull the center stand. Its On the lift with the center stand down. I need to pull the center stand. I do not want any over spray on the wheel after all those hrs of sanding and polishing the wheel. It would have been easy if they did not tack the flanges on. Kinda strange actually flanges tacked but it still has springs to the flange

Aha! The system I have is in two parts, flanges and pipes. That's why on my pics you see the pipe attached with a spring. That would make a big difference in how they mount up. Any chance that you could cut the pipe flush with the flange and then get a sleeve tacked up with a spring attachment like mine?
The sleeve would need to be tacked to the flange and then have the pipe slip over. Just a thought.

in a little while i will go up and take a pic of it. Now that you say it maybe the flanges come off if i remove the spring just might be rust holding on

No gasket between the pipes, just a copper based header sealant (I think). They must be two peices if there is a spring on it. Time for some heat, Kroil, judicious hammering and a pinch of luck. They look almost exactly like mine.
Good luck with the taking apart procedure.

@Bill, the only gasket is between the motor and pipe, nothing between the flange and pipe.

They probably are the same . Not to many companies made headers for them. Does yours have a spring that holds the pipe on after the collector? Someone put a crap muffler on mine . I ordered a yosimura canister. Total cost $49.00 plus all the shipping which is as much as the exhaust. Plus i have to bead blast it and paint it. Did you see how good the wheel turned out http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic ... rt=30.html

Yep! System consists of 1 piece (4 into 1) header and collector, mid-pipe and can. all held together with springs. One hose clamp on the mid and home made aluminum hanger for the can attached to the strap that came with the can.
The only identifying mark on the entire system is where it says "Hindle" on the can. That and I still have the original receipt from when I bought it years ago.
......don't know why my wife calls me a pack rat!

Man, that is a lot of work on the back wheel! Those machining marks must've been a bitch to remove evenly.
