    Hi XJers:

After several months downtime, since my oil dump and engine seizure, I am prepping my replacement engine to get my baby Seca back on the road again.

I need to pull the AC generator off my old engine, and the manual calls for an Exhaust ring & Steering nut wrench (YU-01268) to hold the rotor while you remove the nut, and then a rotor puller (YM-01080) to pull the rotor.

    1) How do I remove the stator coils to get to the rotor?

    2) Are there tools/methods that can be substituted for the above Yamaha tools (AutoZone rentals?), or does anyone have these tools that I can borrow/rent?

After having to purchase the replacement engine, I REALLY don't want to fork out the cash for more tools.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Regards,
    MHHPartner

You won't need anything special to hold the rotor if you use an electric or pneumatic impact wrench to remove the nut since you can hold it by hand. Electric ones have been on sale at most tool stores recently. You may need a puller if the rotor is stuck on the shaft though. If you have the kind of rotor with threads inside the hole all you need is a big bolt that has the correct threads to screw in the hole and pop it loose. I used a bolt that holds the water pump pulley on my Toyota engine to remove the rotor on the XS1100.
I don't know about removing the stator coils to get to the rotor, just follow the instructions in the shop manual.

The stator coils should just pull out. It might take some wiggling to get it out. Like steve said, just use a larger bolt to pop the rotor out.

    Thanks, guys.

I figured out the stator coil just slides out, it was just held in by some of the cover sealant. The sealant appears to be white. Anybody know why regular black silicone RTV wouldn't work?

I don't have a pneumatic or electric wrench, but hopefully I can jam it somehow and get the bolt out.

I did a little research after I posted and found out the puller is an M16 bolt, so hopefully I can find one laying around or at Lowe's.

    Thanks again-

Front or rear axle bolts are around M16 and have been known to be used for such a job.

Electric impact wrench is the quick, cheap way to go. About $40 at Harbor Freight. You should be able to rent one. Indespensible tool, you might want to reconsider owning one.

Yeah, this isn't the first time the need for one has come up, and I'm sure it won't be the last.

I DO have a birthday coming up...

    Thanks for the tip-

Also will come inhandy if you want to remove the nut holding the clutch basket on.

    Hey, thanks, Goon!

Assuming my little Seca shares the M16 axles with the larger bikes, I think I just found my "rotor puller".

    Xjers come through again!

Cheap harmonic balancer puller kit worked for me.

Be carefull as the M16 thread is not an overly common 1.5 one.. Maybe some Bits off the bike, should you be so lucky, will fit.. But simply getting a Hardware store M16 bolt which is unlikely to have the exact thread pitch, will seriously damage the internal threads.. you will get the rotor off once, just maybe not ever again in the future.

Thanks for the heads up. I assumed there were various coarse and fine threads, but wasn't sure what the 1.5 meant.

I'll either use a bolt off the bike that I know is a 1.5 thread, or get one from a dedicated bolt & fastener shop.

Can you provide any guidance on the sealant question? The generator cover on both my old engine and the replacement were sealed with a white substance. Any problem using regular RTV sealant?

    Thanks again,
    Herb

I used the black RTV stuff when I split my engine. Just to be safe use a sealant that is for use in oil and gas and you should be fine.

    XJers:

Well, I got the rotor bolt out by holding the rotor with an oil filter wrench.

However, my axle was too small to use as a rotor puller, so tomorrow I'll try to locate an M16 x 1.5 bolt.

Thanks for all the help and advice-
    Herb
