steering lock rebuild

    I tried searching but didn't find much.

    I have a Seca XJ650RJ. I have the steering lock mechanism but when I turn the key counterclockwise and push down on the cylinder, the pin barely moves.

    Can I pull it apart and rebuild it so the lock works correctly?

    Yes... Yes You can. I had to do that when my ignition switch stopped working correctly.

    So I've got a 93 xj600 seca and when I turn my key, it allows me to turn it around when I push it down to the lock position, however nothing locks.....

    Is there something to look at to see what is missing/broken?

    Should I attempt to rebuild it or just buy a new ignition.... would that fix it???

    The "lock" position causes a large pin to protrude out of the back of the lock body and engage a plate that's welded to the upper rear of the steering head tube.

    The ignition switch is a separate part, that screws to the top of the lock body. Buying a new ignition switch won't solve a lock problem, most replacement switches come separate (you don't get the lock anyway.)

    Like pretty much everything "Yamaha" it can be disassembled, cleaned, inspected, lubricated, etc.

    You can peek up under the bars, you should see the end of the big pin on the backside of the metal "box" that the switch sits on top of. Operate the key and see if the pin comes out, or barely moves, or what. If the pin moves in and out fine, make sure the metal "tab" on the steering neck isn't just gone. It's not uncommon for it to be sheared right off if the bike fell over when the steering was locked, or was the victim of a theft (or attempt.) I've seen bikes where the locking tab had been simply hacksawed off, for whatever reason.

    Ok I can manually move the pin in and out now. It was pretty gummed up.

    However, when I put it back together and pushed the key down and tried to turn it, it felt like it was hitting something and I could turn the key any further. So I dug into the ignition switch. I unfortunately have that all apart right now and can't it back together.

    A few questions

    1 - are there any diagrams anywhere of the switch?
    2- I'm missing the run/park labels on mine. Should the key be slightly left when the bike is in the park position? Should you be able to push the key down from this position and turn it further?

    Ugh, I should have left it alone. It was beautiful today and will be again tomorrow and I want to ride!

    Yes on some models there is a plunger that protrudes out when turning the ignition switch to lock the fork in the turn position, but I'm not sure which models had them.
    I have taken one of them apart to see how they worked and yes, you can take them apart and clean them. You should probably use a small amount of lube of some kid to keep it working properly and use it every once in awhile to keep it working.
