With that much metal in there I bet there is more dammage to other parts. That starter is toast, start looking for another one. I sure someone in the XJ world has a spare, look on EBAY also.
You could buy new gears if you cam find them, but I would say you can get another starter for less.

The gears seem to be the only issue, the motor itself is fine, I just got it way to hot trying to start it with no luck and that is the end result. A new one would be nice but there hard to come by and not cheap.

I have seen many nice lookin starters on fleabay for 25 to 30 bucks. In your case you dont even need one that works...so should be cheaper. However if you ran starter til it got that hot, you may wanna have a look inside.

Heat is not what did that to those hears thats hard core wear I would venture to say that the stater drive got hung up when the engine was running at some point. Even if you find the gears the shafts they ride on is probably worn too. I would defiantly get another starter. Keep in mind also that starter may not be original to your bike. I am surprised that it didnt start chewing up the gears on the starter motor yet,

Most rebuilts require exchange of your old unit; and most of them specify that the gears have to be in good shape.

I would eBay a starter off a low mileage bike; disassemble, clean lube and inspect THAT one, install it and be on your way.

Figuring out mileage on eBay bike parts: Quite often, when somebody parts out a complete bike they will put the instrument cluster up for sale along with everything else. When I see a part I might be interested in that's "mileage dependent" I always do the "view all my other items" thing and see if the guy put the instrument cluster up too, and get the mileage. Plus you can get clues to the condition of the bike from the seller's descriptions on the other various parts. Parts from a parted-out bike often appear in clumps and this can come in handy. Granted, this is not a fool proof system by any means, but there are times it works well.

The Planet-end of that baby is cooked.
Looks like somebody DID clean it and put it together without the Planet Gear Bushing-bearings.

Grab a used Starter and Re-Hab it before you put it on the Bike.

Clean and Lube the whole thing.
    New Brushes.
Grease-up the Gear-end and you'll be good to go.

Find somebody with a Starter that the Commutator got ruined and they're using the thing for a door stop, ... trade him a door stop for the Planet-end!!

(The Starter on XJ-Bikes is the same one used on a Ship-load of other bikes.
You shouldn't have any trouble finding a transplant.)

Just helped another forum member with the same issue! Fortunately I had a spare starter on the shelf and he was back in business but I've got some decent news for you. We found $80 rebuilt ($12 shipping) on ebay ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/REMANUFA ... ccessories ) and it doesn't look like a core is required. Our fellow member just threw the money at him and we'll see what he gets sometime this next week. I'd be interested in the carcass when all is said and done, I'm working on rebuilding mine.
    Good luck!

That would be wonderful but that starter will not fit my Maxim 550, It does not list my bike that this will fit. Also the mounts are way different then mine.
