I bought a 82 xj 650 maxim over the winter. I have just takin it out twice now and both times same thing happins. It runs great for the first five minutes but than it starts dieing.

Ill give it alot of gas and it just slowly dies. To start it i have to have the choke all the way on and once i put it in gear it starts dieing again. I usually can get it close to home before it dies by haveing the choke all the way on and having it wide open.

I will than let it sit for about 30 minutes and it runs fine for another 5 minutes than does the same thing.

    Any suggestions?

Like all performance issues I've read on this site, it seems the first thing to do is remove and clean the carbs. I didn't want to tackle this job myself because I thought it was a big deal. Turns out - it really isn't. About a 15 minute job to take the carbs off. Then take off the bowls, clean them and the jets out. Make sure your floats aren't stuck, make sure your pistons are clean and free and that's 'basically' it. You also have to make sure your petcock is working correctly. Best way to check this is to put it on 'prime' when you're having your dieing issues and see if that solves the problem. Also - when you post a thread, don't just say ' need help' give a clue to your problem in the title. Regards, Rick - another newby.

This one sounds like a fuel supply issue. It runs ok until the fuel in the carbs is used up. After it sits the carbs refill and it'll run for a few minutes again.

Clogged fuel cap vent will cause this. Take it out and ride close to home. When it acts up open the fuel cap. If you get a woosh of air then it runs again you know it's the vent.

Inspect the HOSE that runs from the Intake Manifold to the Vacuum Valve on the Petcock.

    Make sure that it is:
    Not kinked
    Really Vacuum Hose <<00
    Not split or leaking.

If the Bike has a Inline Filter.
    Check it.
    Remove and blow-through it.

    When it stalls:
Try starting it using a blast of Starting Fluid.
Runs on Start Fluid = Fuel Supply Issue.

Does NOT Pop on Start Fluid:
    Ign. & Electrical Related Issue?

Well i took it out agian today and it ran great. I ran it for about an hour and had no problems. The only thing i did was change the gas. Before there was 89 octane gas and i put 92 octane this time, could that have been the problem?

Not likely. Your 650 is perfectly happy with 87 octane (North America, 91 most of the rest of the world).

Bad gas can cause problems, but there is no reason for it to run fine for a few minutes then act up. It's the same gas the whole time.

Sometimes problems hide in plain sight.

If you still have a STOCK Fuse Panel; you'll be better-off removing it and installing a NEW Fuse Panel.

If you don't Solder; find someone who does and Solder and Heat Shrink some "Extensions" onto the Wire Harness and to the Terminal Ends of a New Fuse Panel.

Our resident Parts Supplier >> chacal << has Fuse Panels of High Quality that fit and put an end to Fuse Panel related problems.
