I have a Nephew in the VA, WVA, NC area..He is in NC more often and will be in WVA next month. He is young and only has at best 1000 bucks to work with. He's not looking for anything special at all....Obviously we know that less than a grand doesn't buy you much. Just seeing what options are out there...something small...550 cc..600 cc.

How about a Suzuki DR 125 enduro? Or does he already know how to ride?

He is looking for the xj/xs style ....not even really the seca interest him..I have an 85 maxim and he loves it..I let him take it last year, his brother has a ninja that he has ridin and likes the ride of the maxim better. BUT he doesn't need the option of off road for sure..thanks though.

How handy is he with a wrench? We bought a Honda Nighthawk 450 for our son (16, 15 at the time) for $100 and put about $400 more into it to get a good running bike (he did most of the work). Most anything under $1000 (unless you're really lucky) is going to need new tires, battery and possibly brakes, not to mention cleaning carbs, replacing fluids and the like.

This time of the year the prices are going up (even more so with the price of gas) hopefully someone in your area can help him out.

If he can come up with a little more cash, I've got an 86 Maxim X with lots of new stuff. Advertised for $1800.

JameyP, Thanks and ya we know this.....He's not the handiest but he has the means to get whatever needs to be done done. He just a college kid who commutes and wants something a bit more "wallet friendly" than his vehicle. That kinda stuff....brakes....tires....ect. are to be expected. As long as it runs..and there is no mechanical issues, the other stuff is trivial. I hope I can find him something..I mean 900....1000 bucks he should be able to find something half way decent that shouldn't take much to ride. Even something earlier like an 84, 83, 82..we don't care.

I got my 82 XJ 550 from my grandfather. He bought it a couple of years before that for $300 from an auction. The only thing that was wrong with it was the kill switch was stuck on. It needed carbs cleaned and new battery and other basics, but otherwise it was in good condition.

    Morning-

I am in Northern Virginia with an '82 Maxim 650. It runs and I have been riding it to and from work. It would need new rubber. I had it checked out right after I purchased it by someone who restores them and it was good to go. I had the tank cleaned as well. Battery was replaced last year before I bought it off a Marine shipping out. It has about 39xxx miles. If you are interested let me know. We can talk about price.
