This is my first post so HELLO everyone!
I am bobbing out an '82 xj650 that i acquired a couple months ago. My question is if i change out the stock speedometer to an aftermarket mini one, what ratio should i be looking for? and where would be the best (cheapest) place to purchase one?

i apologize if this question has been answered already, i've searched this forum using the search button. checked the service manual. ive also checked out mikesxs.net with no luck (item descriptions lack a ratio). im getting sick of going to swap meets and finding really cool speedos and not buying them because of not knowing if theyll work. thanks in advance for your replies. im sure ill have many more questions as this build goes on... and dont worry pics are coming

you could check the manual, or take the speedo drive out and look for a ratios on there.

I guess I don't reemember the correct ratio when I re-did my gauges, but any metric bike speedo should work if you plan to go with a used unit. As long as the cable end fits, they should work. Honda, Suzuki, and Kawasaki all used the same ratio on the older bikes.
My speedometer is off of an older CB350 Honda and ismore accurate than the stock unit and the cable end that goes into the spedometer is the same size (and they're pretty cheap too)

Check the back of the speedometer when you find one and see what kind of mounting bolts it has. The old CB speedometers have two screws coming out the backof them and are easy to make mounts for. I just used a peice of aluminum for a bracket and mounted it to the upper triple tree. I added 4 LEDs for the signals, high beam and neutral to the bracket.

Mine is about 3-1/2" diameter which works well.
