So the stock exhaust on my '81 650 is done and I want to get a new complete system. Is anyone out there using Mac exhaust? Either the 4-2 or the 4-1? Any other companies out there making replacement exhausts???

Back in the day there was a couple of choices for aftermarket exhaust; sadly today the MAC systems are pretty much the only choice left for anything new.

I've got the 4-1 all black megaphone system on my bike, which replaced the old stock 4-2 chrome megaphones. Kinda wish I'd spent the extra $$ and got the MAC 4-2 for a more balanced look.

Would love a MAC in my country, all we have are crappy Motad 4-1, Marshal deep tone 4-1, and Jama 4-2 original systems. Back in the day we hand Laser 4-1, and Alpha4-1. The Alpha was very loud with a removable baffle, and the Laser was the closest thing we had to a race pipe. Are Kerker still going in the USA?

I hate to hijack your thread, but I am curious if anyone knows if(or where) I can find a "true" two into one exhaust system?

By true, i mean no collector box.

There is a difference between the Seca and the Maxim 4into2 exhaust
systems made by MAC. They are not the same and bolt up differently.

I had a look around Ebay and I could not find anything to fit your bike.
The 4into2 systems that MAC Exhaust sells are seperate for each side
of the engine and have no collector box but even they do not list one
    for the 550 Maxim.

The only complete chrome system that they list for the 550 Maxim is a
4into1 which is not what you are wanting.

You may want to just keep your header pipes and get 2-into-1 collectors and add some kind of after market mufflers, which isn't very hard to do if you have a muffler shop near by that can fabricate the collectors for you.
I personally think the 4-into-2 idea looks better than the single sided 4-into-1 system anyway, but you can do whatever trips your trigger.

I like having a muffler on each side. So a 4-1 just isn't my style. I suppose I will just wait until I get another fab shop job and do it myself.

The collector box is part of the 550's "magic." Eliminate it and you won't get the "turbo rush" when it hits 6 Grand like you do with it on.

Anybody know if I need to get gaskets for the head pipes on a Mac 4-2? Anything else I'd need for install?

I'm going to skip the 4-1 exhaust. I can't see spending the money on something that's only going to add high end power to a motor (650) that could use more low end than high end. Plus why get something that lowers ground clearance.

You can use the old gaskets but I would strongly advise getting new ones, as you don’t know how long the other ones have been on. All so you don’t want to install a new system on old gaskets to fined they are blowing/not sealing right. Be careful of the exhaust flange studs as they have a tendency to snap, spray with plenty of penetrating fluid and apply I bit of pressure when removing the bolts.

I am not sure what this is off. If you leave out the connector pipe at the back you are almost there with no collector box. You may be able
to have this made up by a good exhaust specalist and then have it
chromed. To do it right you should have the bends done on a mandrel exhaust pipe bending machine. This will make sure that your bends are the same diameter right through the bend. Ordinary
exhaust benders will leave a smaller diameter on the inside radius of
the bend. If you make header pipes then they will only be the one
thickness of steel and when chromed may change color. Origional
header pipes have an outer chrome pipe tube and an inner tube that
the hot exhaust gasses go through. This arrangment means that the
outer chrome tube does not get hot enough to change color. If you
find a good exhaust place that is willing to do the work you will have
to leave the bike with them so that they can fit it up properly. There
is the side stand and centre stand to get right for the left side pipe
run. They can only make sure that this pipe run is ok by fitting the
pipes as they make them. They have good ideas and better bends
than the ones shown in the picture.
