I know the answer but wanted your thoughts and if you have seen this before. Also, what is the crap all around the gasket, gummed fuel or some silicone? Smells like gas, texture like glue or silicone.

It may just be me, but back the camera away a little and try for a better focus. Also disable th flash setting and take the pictures under better lighting. I can't really make out what is there because of the blurring and glare. Not being critical of the pictures or wanting to sound negative, just kind of hard for me to make them out. Just sayin'.

Sorry Maxim-X, was using my phone in the garage, was hoping there was enough of something for people to identify. Let me dig up my actual "camera" lol and I'll get some better pics.

That looks like your main jet. I have never seen one fall out before...I don't know if the 550 is the same carb as the 650, but on the 650, there is a copper washer under the main jet.

The carb is a Mikuni, and yeah, according the the manual, that is the main jet and washer, but other than taking of the first carb bowl and parts, and moving the rack around some, when I took the second bowl off, it doesn't seem like the main jet should have fallen out like that....? And can you make out the fuel gum/silicone or whatever it is all around the bowl gasket? Whatever it is, it looks like it very well may have been interfering with the floats rising/falling.

Are the treads stripped out that would be the only reason other than they didnt screw back in for it to fall out

Only maybe. I've never left a main jet loose yet but I've had them fall off in the bowl for no apparent reason before. (Of course, that was an old British bike; I suppose an out-of-tune XJ could vibrate like that, but I dunno...)

Seriously: Welcome to the wonderful world of old motorcycle ownership.

Them thar's "PO tracks." Git used to seein' em, buckaroo. You'll learn to spot their "signs..."

And that gook was someone's solution to being too cheap to replace the gaskets.

That made me laugh. Out loud. My wife asked me what was so funny that I about choked on my pop. That's "soda" to those of you not from Michigan.

Not sure if that is "Gook", could be Goop, or Gorilla glue, but whatever it is, have fun cleaning those carbs Mac! LOL

How nice about the goop, haven't checked to see if it's stripped yet. PO Tracks, need some counter tracking in the future, lol. So when I get these cleaned up and ready to reassemble, should I use any silicone on the new gaskets, or are the gaskets enough? Probably a noob question but hey. Looks like I'm about the strip out the screw that holds the float valve down too, ahhh! lol!

Is that supposed to be a double crack meaning on my name? lol. Yeah, the zoom on my phone (blackberry with the trackball) works when it feels like it, tonight it wasn't. Just tried my other camera but it's acting retarded too. Thanks for the responses!

Thanks cutlass79500, that's what I needed to know! So apparently, the 600 dollar carb cleaning that the po had done, lol, was uhhhh, less than sat. Dude even re-used the same gaskets and tried to goop them together, wow.

When I get to replacing Carb Bowl Gaskets, ... I brush-on some Marvel Mystery Oil all-over where the Gasket seats and BOTH sides of the Gasket.

Helps the Gasket make a nice Seal.
Prevents the Gasket from "Sticking" to either the Base or Bowl.

You might have to go-back-in and deal with a stuck float.
You won't have to deal with a stuck gasket that rips.

Cool, should I scrape, sand or do anything to the gasket surfaces on the bowl and carb besides what you suggest before I reassemble? I've scraped all the old gasket material off with a small flat bladed screw driver so far, and of course soaked them down with carb cleaner.

I Clean them too bare metal.
Next time you are at the Dentist, ... ask them for a couple of Old Cleaning Instruments that they have in the Out-of-service box.

Real Dental Instruments are wonderful tools for scraping-off Gasket Material and dealing with solidified Foreign Matter in Fuel Bowls and Brake Parts.

Get a Bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil and a package of Artist Brushes in the Stationery Aisle of the Pharmacy.
Just fill the Cap with Oil and paint the surfaces with the stuff.

When I got my bike I had the same exact issue. When I opend the bowls one of the jets were just sitting in the bowl. I have also found a bunch of things the PO did that were crazy. I pulled about 20ft of wiring that went to a switch, that went to absolutly nothing, and it was hidden under the tank.

Hasersys, that was the po's remote control (err wired) starter switch, for those cold days there in Florida, lol. Gotta figure, alot of stuff can happen in 30 years, lol.

Rick, thanks for the advice! Will definitely pick up some mystery oil before I reassemble.

oh i thought that was funny...

if i found my carbs in that condition i would have them soaked in a bath before i put them back together... and i would get a rebuild kit for each of them...

My 750 ran rough when I bought it,found #1 jet in float bowl.Seller said it needed carb work.Funny part was the carbs were spotless, floats set and the bores polished.Cleaned and polished again anyway. So go figure how it fell out.
