Look on XJ4Ever, Len has the most complete explanation and list of VIN codes that I've seen.

Just have to decipher the VIN and you'll know exactly what you have, just not everything the PO "fixed" LOL

Congratulations and welcome! I bought my first bike a few months ago and this site has helped phenomenally! I came upon this site in the same way. As for the fuse box, the stock ones sucked. Are you sure there aren't fused links on each wire? If there aren't, do yourself a favor and put in-line fuse holders on it.

If you are looking for a manual, I have a PDF version of the Haines manual I can email you, or you can contact Chacal for manuals.

Also, check out the XJ Catalog Forum and read through it. He's got invaluable information and just about every part under the sun on there and he is fast and reliable. He's also got a great maintenance checklist, so be sure to read through that before you begin work.

Also, that instrument panel looks NOTHING like the one on my Midnight Maxim. The shape of the speedo/tach are flat on the bottoms on my Maxim, and the tank + handlebars are also distinctly different in style.

I have the same bars, upside down like yours. They feel good, I did mine that way because it reminded me of Z bars.
