Does anybody have and diaphragms for a 82 xj550 Seca or know a place where they aren't $78 a pop? Mine are stretched to hell and is the cause for my idle problems.

"Stretched???" As in "all wrinkly when removed?" That's normal.

Diaphragms have nothing to do with idle problems, unless one is torn or has a huge hole in it. Even then, it probably wouldn't affect the idle, just the ability to respond to throttle.

I think you're about to waste some $$$ barking up the wrong tree. Diaphragms are "unobtanium" or very expensive, as you know; the best way to get some is to pick up a decent spare rack of carbs off eBay.

But those diaphragms will be all "wrinkly" too, honest.

More likely you have a plugged pilot circuit, sync issue or vacuum leak causing your idle problem. Could even be float levels. Almost for sure NOT diaphragms.

Yes apl wrinkly. Will do when I get home today. I have tore apart the carbs multiple times now and cleaned. Them because I cannot get it to run without the choke. When the pistons were lifted by hand in all 4 carbs she idled where she needed to be. I was under the assumption they had Streched causing the needle to bottom out and not get enough fuel flow.

I have brand new idle jets in all 4 carbs and cleaner flows perfectly through all orfices. Vacuum is ok, petcock working. Messing with those pistons while idling with choke on (at 1k rpm) was the only thing I have done that has raised rpm to normal range.

Sounds to me like you need to:

Check float levels using fuel and the "clear tube" method.

    Bench sync.

    Vacuum sync.

All done AFTER the valves have been checked and adjusted, of course, or your vac sync will be a waste of time.

If you can "mess with the pistons" at idle, it sounds like you have your airbox boots removed. The bike won't run correctly that way.

The bike doesn't need to lift the slides to idle correctly; your problem lies elsewhere.

Start a new thread "XJ550R won't idle after carbs cleaned" so we can give the same advice there, and you can benefit from more tech discussion.

Not the source of your problem, you'lll be flushing money down the toilet.
    Fueljets or float height
