Just wanted to say hello, and thank you all for what looks to be an friendly, and informative site.

Its looking like I am picking up a donor '82 xj550 Seca on Saturday.

Owner thinks it's got an ignition problem, but it may be something much simpler (yeah right! :)

If you have suggestions on the first things to check out for a non-running, been sitting for a year, Seca, please let me know.

So i get the bike, and a box of parts on Saturday, and away we go. Hoping to be able to pick up some good tips here, and hopefully soon, give back to the community as well.

    welcome to the site
Like you will hear many times check your back brake pad, add a inline fuel filter if there isnt one added yet. look at your airbox joints and intake manifold boots make sure there arent any cracks. replace fuse panel. There is lots I am missing I am sure but someone will pick up the slack.
    Good luck

Thanks. Those will certainly be good places to start.

I'll have plenty of time for the rest :)

Looking forward to this build. I think it could be a ton of fun, and has the potential to be pretty sweet.

Any suggestions on a resource for an old PDF manual and parts fiche?

    Parts fiche: http://www.yamahapartshouse.net/pages/p ... amaha.aspx

For manuals: eBay. There is a Clymer for the 550s, or the factory book. The Clymer is passable, the factory book better. Best practice is both.

For parts, we have a resident parts source, XJ4Ever. Click the banner logo at the upper right of the page, pm member chacal or send him an email.

IMMEDIATELY CHECK (as in disassemble and inspect) rear brake shoes for delamination: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html

-Fusebox (the clips crumble and break all on their own.)
-Safety circuit (sidestand switch, neutral switch.)
    -Battery
    -BRAND NEW PLUGS: NGK D8EA
    -Plan on carb work.

The 550 Secas are sweet bikes. Check my gallery.

Thanks so much BigFitz! Very good info. Interesting to hear about the fuse box. The PO says he thinks it's an ignition issue, but I would imagine even if he checked the fuses, he might not have noticed corrosion/problems with the holders.

This same issue pops up on CBs from the 70's - so hopefully once I get through the basics you laid out, and some carb tweaking, she might fire up :)

    Appreciate the help!

My electrical post in signature has good pics of fuse panel upgrade and chacal's parts.

Hey gang, I actually found a few PDF documents, of all places, on a Honda forum I frequent. The one that was available for this year was actually a Maxim, not the Seca.

While I wait to get an eBay version of the manual, will this Maxim version have similar info? At least the basic, to get familiar with some of the nuances of this Yamaha era?

    Thanks.
