In an earlier post I was excited that I found an 82 Maxim 750 motor for trade. After picking it up and really looking at it I am thinking it is not the engine I thought it was. I am trying my hardest to identify what year and model it is from but I know it is not for my 82 Maxim.

So if anybody has some 82 Maxim parts (or a spare) motor I would be very willing to trade in the Wisconsin area. Kinda short on cash so most likely would need you to come pick up. I will do more research trying to figure this out. Thanks for looking and let me know if you can help ID.

Oh it will? Well if thats the case I may just look for a set of carbs for it since it doesnt look like mine will fit... wait almost forgot. it would probably be an issue since this motor is chain drive.

Sorry if I am confusing anybody... I have been crazy sick the last couple weeks and still aint all there in the head haha.

The engine should be stamped with what model/size it is, I think it's on the top of the transmission case by the right side cover. If you have pictures of the engine it should help to identify it as well. There are a lot of people around here that know what to look for and could really help you out...

Post the number stamped on the right side of the case (over the clutch), that will tell you exactly what the engine is. Chacal has a post on the forum that links VIN to models and years.

Displacement is cast in the front. Not to be confused with oil volume, which is cast next to the filler hole.

EDITED: Oil volume is cast on the left on my V-Star...next to the filler hole

If it's chain drive it ain't an xj 650/750. It may be a xj 550.
