I have a 82 Maxim 650, and when I picked it up it wouldnt fire at all, I took the carbs apart and cleaned all the jets, and all the passages I could see. The bike now runs great, but when it has sat over night and I attempt to start it with the choke on a little, it wont just fire up, after about 5mins of trying it will fire up on what seems like 2 cyl's then after it idles very low for about 2mins the idle will raise while you can hear that the other cylinders are starting to fire, then its fine. So I am figuring there is a passage somewhere I might have overlooked, Im good with carbs, but not to familiar with these...

    Thanks

smell your oil make sure it does not smell like gas sounds like a possible float problem or possibly petcock problem. If it does not start in the morning pull a plug see if its wet if its not put the petcock in the prime position see if it works

I'm going to have to agree with cutlass79500. It seems like either a float problem or you could have a bad needle and seat valve or valves. The valves should hold about 4psi or more. If they don't hold that then you can try to polish the seats with a q tip and some metal polish. That doesn't always work but with as much as the needle and seat valves cost its worth trying it. Just make sure you clean them out really good afterwards.

I will try and help you with this. I had the same problem with my bike. It turned out to be the chock pick up orafice that runs along the carb bowl. It was pack solid with dirt, I took a wire from a steel brush and finally cleaned them out. The worse of the dirt was at the bottom of the hole. That is the best that I can explain this.

A diagram with that hole circled. This is where the "choke" gets fuel from.
