Hi everyone, just found this site, looks great. I bought an '82 Maxim 650 last week, for the great price of $800 US. The bike is has almost no problems; one of the turn signals was out, but I replaced that. And one of the mirrors is broken, but that's on order, should be here soon. (but no actually, doesn't seem that it was dropped, the turn signals bulb was just out, and the mirror was the other side's)

Anyway, I've ridden it a few dozen miles, and I like it. It seems to have basically no power under 3000 rpm or so (can't even accelerate at all), but maybe that's normal? Cause above 4000 or so it's quite strong.

Anyway, what have other people done luggage-wise with these bikes? I think I've seen a photo somewhere with a luggage rack on the back, behind a sissy-bar / back seat. My bike is completely stock, and has only the minimal sissy bar that is at about the level of the back seat.

Saddlebags are also something I'd consider, but I had those on my last bike (an '82 Suzuki GSX750E I toured around Japan on) and while they were nice it was a pain to take them off and on.

I asked at the local Yamaha / Kawa / Suzuki dealership, and they basically knew nothing about my bike, and had no advice on where I could get anything. Hmm.

Anyway, any info about luggage racks and stuff would be appreciated, especially if any of you guys have them, can post pictures, etc. Or any reccomended bags.

Hope to hear from people here, seems like a really nice site to go along with my really nice bike!

I can give you the advice I was given for my xj750j. Keep checking salvage yards,e-bay and anywhere else you may happen to think. Expect to pay top dollar as well. Thes out of date parts are hard to find. Congrats on the bike and welcome I am kinda new here myself but people are very knowledgeable and willing to help. Dont be afraid to look throught the archives for anything. Have a good one

Great bike and it seems to be very good value for the money
How about these- maybe too modern for the bikes style?

I use an older set of Nonfangos in wich I have build turn signals into.
They fit the look of my 750Seca - I think
There's always some used cases on the market.
Do you have krauser side cases in the US?

Igarashi, I have a chrome luggage rack and sissy bar taken off my '82 XJ650 in very nice shape....a few rust spots on the luggage rack chrome, but should polish out nicely. Luggage rack is about 13" long (luggage storage section) and bolts to the seat grab handle mounts. Sissy bar is about 21" tall and mounts to the luggage rack, and it has an 11" tall black padded backrest. All of it is made by KG Engineering, Woonsocket, RI.....but until I looked, I thought they were standard factory Yamaha parts, as they blend very nicely with the overall style of the bike. $55 plus shipping, which may add about $25 or so because of the size of the items. Let me know if you're interested.........

Most of the luggage racks I've seen were DIY projects. They looked professional, just took a bit of work to make them fit securely.

check you gas tank, my maxim had no power at low rpm either, I traced it back to the gas tank being rusted out and plugging up my carbs. eventually they were so plugged it fouled the spark plugs and if I could start the bike it died when putting on any throttle, if you could get it down the highway and go fast it was fine. after I cleaned the carbs and lined the gas tank, it was fine.

I should also note, the gas tank had seemed fine, until I needed the reserve, that's what kicked up all the rust.

oh yeah, I also got some cheapie saddle bags from a local dealer, but as you said, most of them know nothing about the older bikes. I like the storage but it makes it time consuming to take the seat off, or use the helmet holder.
