Rear Shock Modification Mod

Ok, Long story short I bought shocks off Craigslist on the cheap to use on my bike. Since I bought them on the cheap and they are worth over $600 I am using them one way or another.
This is the shock question and the bottom picture shows my issue.
These shocks were made for a harley. I want to build out the thickness of MY metric bolt with something (electric tape, bubble gum (j/k)).
Any useful ideas at all will help. USEFUL IDEAS

 

Take the bolt to Home Depot and see if you can find a peice of hard copper you can use as a bushing.

If you have to Bill you can get it alittle bigger than the bolt. Use the dremel to slice some out of the center and squeeze it to fit. I have use that method on several project were I needed a bushing.

 

I like what you are saying but, I cant figure out what you mean. LOL

 

use the copper to slide over the bolt to take up the space in the shock mount. if it is too big for the bolt slice down the center of the copper the length of the peice allowing you to close the inside dia. of the copper around the bolt.

 

I think he means if you can't find one the exact size get a slightly larger diameter copper tubing and cut down the side of it so that it can be 'compressed' smaller to fit.

Think piston ring.

Since it looks like the rubber bushings are pretty shot (might be wrong!) it wouldn't hurt to call up progressive and get them to send you a new set of metric gear. I can't remember how much it cost but it wasn't much and it was a very painless process.

 

New shocks come with a whole bag of spacer sleeves, and I only ever use 2, or 4. The rest go in a parts drawer.

What's your OD and ID required? Maybe I have some that will fit.

If not, get Progressive to send you a set of metric hardware, as suggested above.

 

I just sent Progressive Suspensions a message to get a quote with shipping included for...

2. new shoulderd sleeves

Those shocks are 11" and stock is 12.5.

Is the 1.5 inch drop pretty significant when you are running these? I would think on the hardest dampning setting it might not be to bad.

 

I will let you know by Thursday. I'm counting on these being pretty good. I showed them to my brother and he was trying to kill me for them.

I just did the same thing myself with some 412-4022 Progressive shocks. They arrived in the mail yesterday. I called Progressive and they put me through to the tech department. The guy told me what I needed and even threw in an adjustment wrench for free. I ordered a new bushing kit and a metric conversion kit. It ran me $24.95 (or so) plus $10.25 for shipping from Cali to Ohio. Progressive was very nice and great customer service.

My shocks came with the chrome sleeve over the shock that I don't want and the tech guy even sent me a PDF via email on how to remove the cover. I was impressed.

The metric kit contains 12 bushings. For my 82 XJ750 I need the thinnest bushings for the top bolts and the thickest bushings for the bottom bolts. You get an extra set for both the top and bottom and have four leftover mid-size bushings. You also get some washers of various sizes, I think 4.
