Hey guys, I got the old girl all put back together. I finally received my extended cables and brake hose so I was a kid on Christmas morning...excited to get her out on the road and try my new bars on for size.
Now last year I purchased a set of Harley mufflers and installed them on the bike, used it all year last year with those pipes and it ran great. This year I know the carbs are a bit out of sync...nothing terrible, it runs fine I assume they're outta sync because I have a mildly lumpy idle. The bike also runs a little bit lean but again nothing crazy. Now......when I took it out I noticed the motor makes a noise I didn't hear before..It's kind of a "tin" sound like a tap against tin but definitely comes from what sounds to be the top of the motor. There is also a vibration at high RPM's...not only at high speed..always at high rpm's. The bike feels very "machiney" for lack of better words. It's hard to describe the vibration the bike just doesn't feel smooth anymore. Like I said the only word that I can think of to describe it is machiney..???. Any thoughts?

Had a similar symptom years back and adjusted the cam chain. It seemed to help. Simple to try and it may help your situation.

Adjust the camchain; check and adjust the valves, and re-sync. That should take care of the lumpy idle/vibration.

The noise sounds like the camchain is probably smacking the inside of the valve cover.

    Just a thought...
If you have recently installed a windshield or fairing, you will hear noises you didn't know existed before. With wind protection, the engine noises are so much clearer and noticable than before. Just sayin'.

No windshield or fairing..and the vibration is only going down the road when in between shifts when my rpm's are at their highest I get it..kind of vibration you get when a motor mount on a car is bad you get that machine feels..I wish I could explain it better. But how long could I ride it with adjustments out of whack? I only ask because right now she's my only means of transportation and it won't be untill maybe sunday before I have time to get into it. Am I going to do damage riding it this way until then?

Also another question...My 85 700 apparently is an auto adjust on the cam chain..how do I adjust it if say the auto adjust isnt working properly the same way a manual would?
