I have to push the turn signal switch back the opposite direction to turn it off. When I push the switch into itself it will not cancel the signal. Would this be a problem with the flasher relay?

Not the relay. There is a separate canceling unit. They frequently die. Most live w/o and/or don't care about them.

If the signals won't cancel with the button try taking the switch off and spraying the heck out of it with electrical cleaner.

After cleaning the switch I used white lithium spray to lube the switch. Mine wouldn't even push in until I did this, works like a brand new switch now.

If that doesn't work then you'll have to take the switch apart and clean up the connections, or buy a new switch.

Great thanks! I'm starting to get tired of pushing it back the other way and then sometimes it signals the opposite direction. This could cause some confusion on the road. I'll pull it apart and clean it up. See what I get.

I had the same issue and tried several different things including spraying the heck out of it but that didn't work. For safety sake I just went ahead and called XJ4Ever and got a new switch. I am so glad that I did. Very easy ot change out and no more looking down to see if the blinker went off. It isn't worth crashing over so my recommendation would be to pay out the money for a new switch, if you can, and be done with it. You'll be glad you did. :)

Wait, the blinker is supposed to self cancel without manually returning the switch to the center? Would that work the same for my 82 XJ750?

Dave, the signal switch should return to center on it's own. If it doesn't, then it definitely needs to be cleaned/lubed/replaced. That is a function of a spring inside the switch, not the electrics.

Then, after it returns to center, the auto-cancel should cancel the light after so many seconds/feet, depending on speed. If it doesn't, then you can press the switch inwards to cancel the signal.

If your switch sticks to one side and has to be manually returned to center, then it might be beyond repair.

Just keep in mind, there are a lot of small parts inside the housing, so if you decide to take it apart, don't lose any pieces. But you should be able to clean it without taking it totally apart.

I wouldn't spend a lot of time on it. I put about 5 minutes worth of work into mine. any more than that and you've probably got a switch that needs to be replaced.

Oh, and to answer your question, yes, it would be the same on your 750.

Yes. Most all late '70s-'80s (and later) Yamahas were/are fitted with the self cancelling system. When all is working as it should:

The switch should return to center on its own.

Pushing the switch straight in should cancel them.

    If not operated manually,

The turn signals should self-cancel (if everything is working correctly) after the bike has been moving for 10 seconds or has traveled 150 meters (490 feet) whichever is greater.

The system works by using a proprietary Yamaha self-canceler/relay and a reedswitch in the speedo to provide the "the bike is moving and how far" signal.

I like it except for extended-signal times on the highway when "re-initializing" it a couple of times may be necessary. The 10 seconds is approximate, and it doesn't take long to cover 490 feet at 80mph, so it's running on "time" at that speed.
