long time rider, first time Yami owner. Saw the Maxim build on kneesliders and had to do something similar. Picked up a running 1980 650 on Craigslist for $500. Have big plans for this bike and I am sure I will need some help along the way :D

I have been a dirt/street/track rider for 20+ years and think I am ready for a unique cruisers. I'm a web developer/designing in Boca Raton, FL and I am pretty familiar with wrenching on bikes. Just wanted to introduce myself and say Hi

Here is my (new to me) XJ

    Welcome!

I was wondering how long that would take. That rack is made of pure unobtanium. If you're not going to use it it will help finance your project.

Another welcome here, from the great white north, well actually we're green now. Shit, I hope I haven't jinxed myself! 8O
Looks like you got a good set of bones to work with. What's the history and condition of the bike in general? I'm surprised no one has mentioned the rear brake issues regarding old bikes, brake delamination is what you can search for. For parts, this forum is great for buying and selling but if there is something you need that no one else has click on the XJ4EVER sign and check out Chacal (Len) for anything and everything you need for your bike.
    Oh, and more pictures please.

    Cheers, Graham

I will certainly be parting a bunch of stuff out when I break out the torch. You will be first inline for the rack [IMG]

the braking is sub par for sure. I have been digging around the forum and looks like putting a rotor on the rear is major PITA. I am 100% going to upgrade the MC and see how hard a dual caliper set up would be (I know the 750's have them). Still researching....

oh, and thank you all for the warm welcome, I know I found the right place for help in my build

Welcome from Kansas. That rack is pretty choice.

You will find a few minor differences having a 1980 650. Most notably is the lack of YICS. Don't worry about or waste your time reading about it, (unless you get bored). Skip those pages and keep the project going.

The brakes do lack somewhat. Once in a while I feel I am riding a whale.
