hi everyone i have a new project but need to know a few things, my project is retro fitting a set of 99 r6 lower forks onto the 18 maxim upper forks. does anyone know if this will fit or have they tried this. or will it be easier to put the full forks onto the maxim tripple tree. i want to use the r6 dual front brakes on the maxim, im hoping this set up will work.

    thanks
    dave

I'd use the entire R6 front setup, triples and all. I'm also working on a 2000 R6 front suspention on a 81xj rigid.

You'll need the whole front end - XJ forks are 36MM and R6 forks are 43MM so they will not interchange

Well ... I'm not sure about this. The diameter of the head shaft and the bearing housing are absolutely different. 25 vs 30 mm and 42 vs 55 If I remember correctly.

As others are saying you have to have the whole set-up: upper and lower triple tree, upper and lower fork legs and the brake callipers as well. You have no other options.

I'm going to do the same (everything arrived) and looks like I have to grind the head shaft to match the old bearing. Also I have to modify the wheel shaft to match a bearing what I can use with the front wheel.

Other than this: you have to find out how to mount the instrument panel and the ignition key unit (we're talking about an XJ 650). The upper triple tree holds different mounting points and I'm sure there is no swap on replace.

Ah yes. I almost forgot, you have to have new handlebar. It's possible to have other than clip-on handlebars but I think it's not a good idea because you will weaken the upper triple tree. So, you have to buy a pair of clip-ons as well.

You can drill the R6 top triple and mount risers for normal bars. The streetfighter guys do it all the time (I've done it on my ZX9). Just make sure you put some large washers underneath to spread the load.

Use the entire front suspension from the R6 and run 2 lower stem bearings from the XJ, you may need to make a thin spacers for the upper bearing since the upper is 15.2 and the lower is just 15 but it's no big deal. The inner diameter of the lower bearing is the same as the upper and lower bearing of the R6 (which is 30) and the only difference is the heighth of the upper and lower bearing of the XJ (as stated above, upper is 15.2 and the lower is 15). All in all, with a little time and alot of trial and error, this will work and hopefully I'll have mine on before the end of summer....lol. This has been a year long project between projects..

i ended up going with a seca front end sloted rotors and dual fron brakes calipers with heavy duty front springs, this swap costs about 350 for every thing, the r6 wsap would cost about a grand i didnt want to dump that much into the bike

does anyone know if its possible to mount a 2007 r6 motor in a 82 yamaha maxim frame and keep the shaft drived. i love my maxim but sadly the motor has seen better days, and i have a 2007 r6 that the front end is wrecked on and i had the idea to put the r6 motor on the maxim 650 frame. will this potentially work? is it going to be extremely difficult? im a noob ive done some stuff but never anything this difficult should i even try it?

    Wow 8O

Absolutely won't fit. Never. Totally different engines, frames, everything.

The only thing they share in common is the badge on the tank.

You would be better off trying to source another XJ motor. 650 or 750 motors fit into the 650 frame IIRC. I don't know if you need a "titled" motor, or if it's just the frame, but you should be able to get a running non-titled bike for not much money if you shop around

NEVER say never. ANYTHING is possible, especially with a torch and welding machine.
