would not having the airbox on my 82 xj 650 maxim make it not idle? it runs on choke but then cuts out when choke is off. I have heard the carbs need to be restricted a bit by a filter to create vacuum in order to run correctly?

Are you talking when you first fire it up or after it warms up it still requires the choke to idle? The choke is really an enrichment circuit which means adds more fuel not really a choke which restricts the air.

You are correct about the airbox and filter being necessary for getting your bike to idle - these bikes seem to need that little bit of air restriction or else they run waaaay lean, which is likely why it'll run with the enrichment on - lots of posts on this under: jetting, mixture, idle (wont), carb problems, etc. Try the search option and read thru Chacal's articles on XJ4EVER - huge amounts of info there!

UH-OH! You just used the P word! Don't be surprised if your thread is hijacked by by dozens of people posting just the word: PODS!

Seriously though - read through Chacal's carb information at XJ4EVER (top right corner of this site's homepage) - pods can be made to work, but the general concensus is: waaaay too much work for questionable returns. If you absolutely have to have them, be prepared for MAJOR tuning issues, and be sure to invest in the parts for a COMPLETE carb rebuild including all o-rings, throttle shaft seals, needles, seats, and any parts no longer serviceable due to gunk/corrosion/wear. You would also be well advised to obtain a YICS blanking tool (if your bike is equipped with this system), and a colortune plug. Access to a reliable mechanic who knows these bikes, has a dyno in his garage, and is willing to work for beer may also come in handy.
This issue comes up very frequently around here ...to the point where a quick search will bring up dozens of hits. If you go this route, heed the advice of those actually running similar or identical equipment to the set- up you're using, and take the comments of nay-sayers with a grain of salt and a dose of humility.
    Good Luck!
