    Re: What is the difference between the Maxim and the Maxim X

    So your basically asking us to solve for X.....

    mwhahahah...Sorry I couldn't help myself.

    The biggest difference is the X model has the 5 Valve engine and is water cooled.
    The standard Maxim is 2 valve and air cooled.

    big difference between the 2
    saber;
    regular is air cooled 2 valve per cyl
    x is 5 valve per cyl water cooled that has a higher redline
    The regular n model has more low end torque the x has an unbelievable top end rush which compares to engines much larger in size. Big difference in performance in the two. Even after 25 years the maxim x is still the fastest cruiser style 700-750 out there which is very impressive for the leaps and bounds motorcycle engines have come in the last 10 years.
    And the maxim x is much harder to do a valve adjustment on. They are both great bikes a lot of the bodywork seats ect interchange just not the motor. Also a lot of the sites you go to get the specs mixed up between the 2 of them. I have seen a lot of sites that list the maxim with the maxim x specs i guess it happens when you make 2 versions of the same bike for the same years. Here is a link to a site that tells a lot about the x and i believe there are some tests in there with both of them.

    Great info here, thanks guys. I ask because my buddy found one for sale asking $300 with 5500 miles on it but needs head work. He offered $150 and they are in negotiation right now. Hes been working on my xj650 bobber build and asked me the difference. We just put on a custom exhaust today. Anyway thanks guys

    It would scare me miles wise on either one 5500 miles should not need head work even if they never adjusted the valves just be carefull something does not sound right but sounds like a good deal if it does have that low of miles. I guess the x could of overheated same with the n but if its air cooled when they overheat they just usually leak oil out of the gasket

    The difference between the Maxim and the Maxim-X?

    A dialed-in, pimped-out and fine-tuned Maxim is like having your own, personal Private Jet.

    A dialed-in, pimped-out and fine-tuned Max-X is like having your own, personal
    F/A-18E/F Super Hornet Fighter Jet.

    In the CycleWorld Test Magazine; they wrote this of the X-Bike.

    "The X distinguishes itself from all the other XJ's by being the quickest incarnation yet. Yamaha's XJ900 Seca, a rocket, just two years ago-posted a respectable 11.82-second, quarter mile, our stock Max-X ran a scalding 11.79-second quarter at 112.82 mph. Furthermore, its 0-60 acceleration is closer to Kawasaki's potent 900 Ninja than to anything in its-own class. Its top-gear roll-on figures from 45-70 mph place it deep into big-bike territory and prove that the Maxim X doesn't sacrifice mid-range for blinding top-end."
