Does anyone know if the Master Cylinder and switches are interchangable from the 82 with 2 part bars to the 83 with the 7/8 dia pullback bar?

I'll be finding this out soon enough myself. The switches and MC are mounted on the round part of the modular bars for the '82, so as long as that is 7/8" like the '83 bar then it should work. I'm wondering about the angle of the MC once it's mounted on my new bar. You may want to do a search on this, I've seen others have this question too.

    Fritz,
Thanx for the reference. Always good to have something to check against. I use Bike Bandit myself. Same diagrams, different part numbers.

    Professor,
    Here is what I found.

My experience with part numbers be they automotive, truck, or bike leads me to the point that they are only valid for that supplier at that time.

That said. a check on part numbers on YPH show that they are different. But the service note for the 83 stating that the part number was replaced from one with the same base number makes me question the difference.

Checking the part diagrams I noted that 82 uses a switch ass'y with wire lead that appears to exit the bottom of the housing which is not used in 83. I have to assume that this is for a low fluid warning sensor that was discontinued for 83 and replace with a sight window in the housing as my 83 has.

Neither of these eliminates the possibility using the 82 master on the 83 bar.

Checking the throttle grip to see if they use the same size bar I found that both years use the same throttle grip. So they are both based on the 7/8 dia round bar mount.

The next point would be making sure it would function the same. Checking the rebuild kit I find that it is the same for both years also. So the travel and displacement are the same for both years.

A quick visual check shows both style bars have a slight downward angle to them at the mounting point. Most all automotive vehicles have master cylinders designed at a slight upward angle. As long as there is enough fluid in the camber to allow proper function the mounting angle should be a minor issue of appearance and personal taste.

My personal issue is the o-ring sealed wire lead exiting the bottom. This is a failure point for me and potential source of leakage. A saftey issue for me!

If you have ever had hydraulic brakes fail on you in a medium duty Truck/ Trailer at 65 mph going downhill on an exit ramp with a traffic light and stopped cars at the bottom you would understand. Thankfully the light changed, the cars moved, and gravity took hold before I got back up to the highway!

While you can mount the 82 master to the 83 bar, and it funtions the same. The better choice would be to use the 83 master on the 82 bar to eliminate the potential problem with the wire lead.

Just out of curiousity I checked against the 85-86 Maxim XJ700. these appear to be a direct intercange for the 83. The XJ900 Seca may also work.

    Just my oppinion

    Thanx
    Ghost
