I am new to this blog and am amazed at all the info on here

Before the judgment comes this is my second bike, my everyday bike is a VTX 1800...so I am in no rush and am willing to go to great lengths to get it how I want it. I am not a mechanic but have been driving bikes since the age of 6 (currently 29) and have worked on them but have not got into fine tuning of carbs.

    I have a project that I started this weekend....weeeeeeeeeeeeee

    List of objectives

    - putting a 750 engine into a seca xj650rj frame (which have already got to fit but took out again to paint)
    - soda blast the engine
    - paint frame, headers, engine, and other random parts black
    - paint tank, fenders, and side covers (white with a checkered stripe decal)
    - put on custom exhaust (possibly drill baffles) because original had none
    - LOOKING AT PUTTING ON POD`s (which I know has been very controversial)
    - re-jet
    - cafe handle bars
    - re-upholster seat

I need a couple of recommendations on.........

    Frame paint
    Engine paint
    Headers paint
    Cafe handle bars

As I said before I am not to familiar with jetting bikes, but the bike came with a box of Dyno jets and needles, I am assuming I will probably use the stage three if I go with pods and drill some holes in the baffles on my exhaust....yes or no.... or maybe

I would appreciate any thoughts, opinions, comments or concerns especially on the jetting

I will be posting pics tomorrow

    Thanks Jon

yes pods are a debate, but do what you want to do, more incentive since it came with jet stuff.

as far as exhaust, i like 4-1's on cafe

I am going to use rustoleum flat black rattle can paint on my frame. Decent enough quality, fast, and easy. Better still, easy to touch up!

Ya gotta go 4-1 on that baby. Sound is wicked nice. If you ask me.

You said you are soda blasting, just rinse it with cold water & dry, most of the hi temp paints are self priming.

Grind off the paint on the end of the ribs then brush clear on to cover the bare aluminum.

if it's stuck in the head you have 2 easy choices, if thees enought left at the top, weld something to it to get it out, or b left hand drill bit then use an ez out

And when you are done with that, back to carb discussion. When altering the exhaust and running pod filters (I have pods and a 4-into-one) the temptation is to go huge on jetting right away. You might get lucky and land on the right combo the first time, but in my experience, it's better to start conservatively and get crazier from there. Mine finally runs great, but only after MONTHS of fiddling with carb parts. What a chore. It's even worse if someone has been into the carbs before you. Comments are welcome. Good luck.

    Re: `82 xj750 into a `82 xj650r

Someone has definitely been in these carbs the pilot jet has been filled with something and then drilled 8O and the main is already #124. Not sure what I'm going to do yet but I bought a colortune which I am hoping will help.

I bought the Bike with a dyno jet kit so I may try a #130 which is the smallest next to the #120's but I'm guessing the #130 would be too rich. and the kit has a #43 pilot but that seems rich too. I may try them both for s**ts and giggles.

    Good going.

Did you replace it with a stud and nut, or a bolt?
