hey guys, I'm looking to get a set of mirrors. i only had one, but i smashed it when i tipped it. it didnt look good anyways (i think it was the stock one)

I have been looking at a new set of mirrors, but it's hard to picture what they look like on there. can anyone post pictures so i can get a general idea?

    also, one mirror or two?

The handlebars are 7/8 inch. Be sure to get one mirror with reverse threads if you are going to use the stock mounting system. One hole is reverse threaded, the right one I believe, so your mirror will loosen instead of snapping off if you go down.

You might consider bar end mirrors. Fantastic little idea. They stick right out so you can get a good look at what is beside you and behind you. My favorite are the Napolean Bar End Mirrors.

i've always been partial to mirrors under the controls, i think it makes the profile of the bike nicer, you also are under your shoulders so you have a great view of what's behind you. i run one under the left side. http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=30596.html

    The stock bars are 7/8"
If you have the stock MC/mirror mount it is reverse threaded.
There are a lot of choices in mirrors, you can get round, rectangle, flames, billet, plastic (eww). But whatever you decide to go with, definitely get TWO!
You may only look in the right side mirror once it a while, although you should train yourself to check both mirrors. Safety first, and if you only use one mirror then you only see half of what's behind you.

Mine too. They're still manufactured but have had some import/distribution issues. Worth tracking down, they often come up on eBay. They're a little more expensive than some of the stuff that's out there but the quality is excellent:

If you look at the pics that Fitz posted. That round post just to the left of the hi/lo switch (in the 1st pic) should have a removable plug. This should be part of your clutch lever mount. That will be your left mirror mount.

As long as the mirrors give you good visiblity to the rear and side. Then it only leaves personal preference to deal with. One of the easiest ways to add your own personality to your bike. Absolutely go with two mirrors though!

Here's the thing with mirrors: Looks are fine but the whole idea is to see behind you. What happens when you change handlebars (something I always do on a Jap bike) is quite often the stock mirrors no longer give you anything but a nice view of your own shoulders.

So when choosing mirrors, by all means pick some you like, but if it turns out they don't work for you, then keep looking.

I went through three different sets of mirrors before I tried the Napoleans. One set was decently wide, and gave a good view, but absolutely would not stay adjusted at road speed. The next set worked well also, but was really just too obtrusive, appearance-wise. And so forth.

The Napoleans are great; seeing around my wide self is no issue, and they are vibration-free and clear as can be at road speed. Highly recommended, if you can find them.

Switches are from a Yamaha Royal Star, Bought second hand from ebay. For polished aluminium switches they were reasonably priced. Some modifications were required though

Most aftermarket perches are RH thread, which is normally not an issue if you are buying aftermarket mirrors, as most come with both options.

It may be and adjustment to fit over the throttle tube. Not sure on this though. Otherwise they should just slide on and off.

7/8" bars take a 7/8" for the left and 1" for the right to fit over the throttle housing.

only downside of those chrome controls is you'll lose your enrichment lever on the left side.

I had to put 1" sleeves on the bars. Worked out the wiring for the switches then modified the plugs so they were a plug and play on the original harness.

Where I live you only need a few seconds of enrichment, so I just hold the lever on the side of the carb, instead of having a lever on the bars. Wont even need to do that when the injection is finally all fitted up.

Take a look into "pro grips" they have a bunch of styles and for me at least the 601, which is technically a scooter grip, is super comfy. A set came on my brothers nighthawk and I put a set on my 650 and have a set waiting to go on the 750 when I start putting it back together.

For most aftermarket grips you will need to smooth out the ridges on your throttle tube at least a bit and maybe shorten it so everything meshes up nice, there are a few grips out there that are too long for your throttle tube but not many. If you don't care about the old grips just gently cut them off. To put the new ones on your air compressor is your friend. get the grips started on, then block the far end of where you are installing them, point the air gun into the small hole on the end of the grip and you should be able to slide them on nice and smooth. You can use the same principles to remove a grip if it isn't glued on.

It took a tap and die set, adapters, a pipe cutter, and time but I love these Arlen Ness Mirrors so I did it. Also Arlen Ness makes cast stem mirrors that fit directly but I'm stupid and never do things the easy way.
