Ok Guys, This is the last straw.

I have done everything I have read, put hundreds of hours into these carbs.... I just can't get them right...

My bike finally starts, but Revs at 5000+ RPM's. Here is wha I've done so Far (Not in this Order).

    Cleaned them (Multiple times, thoroughly)
Checked for Vacuum leaks, propane torch method,
    Bench Synced (Paperclip Method)
    Measured the Floats (Dry)
Clear Tube Method (Everything lined up)
Turned Idle SCrew completly CCW, shouldn't Idle at all.

Stil have the same problem, Bike starts fine, just Idles incredibly high.... Can't figure out What it is... Anyone Near Lynchburg, I'll load it up in the Pickup and Bring it to you. If not, I'm finished, and I'm just going to buy a new Bike!!!!!!

Dang bud, it ain't that bad! You gotta keep an open mind, it is all a learning experience....

Make sure the idle screw isn't screwing with you, and also that the throttle cable is free and not hanging the butterfly's open.

What is ccw? Maybe you turned the wrong way?

If I figured out these carbs anybody can, seriously.... I am working on some 550 Suzuki carbs right now for a buddy that are kicking my ass, so I feel your pain.

Try disconnecting the throttle cable and see if still runs at high idle. Is it possible the cable is routed wrong?

Cable could also be sticking - Might need lube or replacement (cheap).

    Is throttle handle sticking?

Do either set of carb boots have holes? The airbox have holes?

Re: Throwing in the Towel, GD CARBS!!!! Lynchburg VA

    No Bike Idles a 5K rpm's.
To make 5K it takes Main Jet Supplied Fuel.
    Throttles are OPEN.

Look problems related to the Throttles and Linkage being held open.

    Hanging-up Cable
    Control Grip moved.
    Throttle Cable moved; moves.
    Improperly attached Puller / stuck.
Hose Clamp fowling moving parts on Linkage.
    Bad cable; not moving freely.

    Air Leaks ...
OK, ... Air Leaks, too. But you are making 5K and that takes Mains.

Sounds like your floats are upside down. I did this once and the bike idled at 5K.

I am taking a shot in the dark did you have the rack apart? did you bench sync the carbs sounds like they are way out of sync one or two of the throttle plates are open. I have seen carbs that were synced in-properly where you could pull the adjustment screw out of its hole and still be idling at 3k. Also hows your cable routing sometimes that can effect it also . Make sure for some reason the cable has not pulled out of the piece that goes up into the the grip. would be nice if it was something simple like that

"Turned Idle SCrew completly CCW, shouldn't Idle at all"

Corect me if I'm wrong here. Full CCW sitting on the bike looking forward, or From the front of the motor looking to the rear?

If this is seated on the bike then you have drasticly increased the throttle plate position. The spring on the screw will be fully compressed. Extremely high idle!

If looking from the front then the screw should have come out of the retaining post. No idle at all.

    Throttle rotation hard or easy?

A hard throttle is the first sign of cable intereference, or drag.

Hi Guys, thanks for the input.

Floats are not upside down. The throttle is detached.

There is a small crack in the airbox... but the bike ran fine last year. Does anyone live near Lynchburg, Roanoke, Waynesboro, VA????? I just can't get these working!

I'm a computer programmer, not a mechanic... lol

Guys!!!! I actually got it working... it ended up being a stuck throttle.... I can't believe it worked!!!!!!

Wow, I feel like an idiot... there is still alot of tweaking to do... but i took it around the block . It still bogged down a little bit on the acceleration, but at least the darn thing runs!!!!

    YIPPEEEEEEEEEE!
    Time to celebrate! [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]
But not while operating a motorcycle!
Sounds like, other than a couple of Gremlins, you got it sorted. Now that it's running I'd keep going the way it is until fall then you can tear into the carbs again, unless it bogs really bad, then you will have to pull them. For now, just ride it and enjoy it.

Glad to see you got it going again. I hate to hear that you threw in the towel!! I'd get a color tune plug if I where you, it really helps in the setup.

That and get that throttle cable cleaned, lubed and properly routed.
Awsome to hear of your success CM!!! This is precisely why this forum exists and it is gratifying to see it working as intended! Best tool in the box next to the factory manual.

Congratulations! I had a similar problem and once I zipped tied the throttle cable up when reinstalling the carbs, it worked out fine without the 5k idle at start up! So happy for you!

Its a heck of of thing, a machine can be such a challenge, but also such a pleasure and what a great feeling it is to get things sorted out, don't make lite of the fact that most people just can't or won't have the patience it takes to work on stuff they at first don't understand....I've been working on motors for 30 years, but this bike tested my patience.

few things requiring little effort have very large rewards.

Good on ya for stayin the course.

Hello, fellow Virginian! Glad you got it working!

I'm also more savvy with computers than motors, but have managed to get mine usable :p

My first long ride was to Lynchburg, to the sheetz on 29 then fueled up and back home to Richmond =)

Hope to see you on the road!

    Congrats CM,

I think most of us here have felt that inner rage when we are just out of tricks, patience and rationalizm....trust me. Mine was many years ago when I had my first bike with 3 sets of points. I didn't really understand that filing them caused them to wear faster and I simply could not keep all three cylinders firing...always broke down on the side of the road, always trying to get it to run....and one day I just snapped and almost pushed that bike down a ravine next to the highway. Instead of pushing it down the ravine, I kicked it over on its side. Nope, it didn't make it run and I felt like a raving lunitic standing there on the shoulder of the road.

I was angry, embarrased and beaten. I resolved right then that it would be the last time I ever lost patience with an engine. That was the point where I began to learn the "how and why"...and things have gone much better since.

The first post of this thread reminded me of that day.....and I'm really glad that you were able to overcome!!

    Congratulations! You made it!!

    jeff
