I have the original stock seat on my 750 Seca and it is pretty uncomfortable for any length of time. I am good for about 30 minutes and that's about it. My wife is good for about 20. I have no idea what to even look for in an upgrade so I could use some suggestions.

Is it worth refoaming the existing seat? Would that give enough of an improvement to make it worth while?

I am currently having the seat of my 550 recovered and had them add extra padding to the seat, they guaranteed that it would be much softer when they were done with it. If it turns out well, I'll let you know what materials they used.

I've done improvements to my seat thruout the years on several bikes. Most come way to hard for my light frame (140 lbs) so I usually have to do some kind of changes with most seats.
All I do is remove the vinyl from the seat and peal it back, leaving it attached to the back of the seat pan. Then, with a long serated knife, I cut an inch or so off the top of the seat foam. A bread knife or long bladed electric knife works well for this. Then I get some kind of soft foam rubber to replace the removed portion with. I cut up an old mattress years ago and saved all the foam just for this purpose. You can also find foam at some fabric stores.
Now I also found "Memory foam" that works exceptionally well for seats and That's what I used for the last seat I did. It forms to your backside better, giving you better support with even weight distribution. Very comfy!
Then pull the vinyl back over the seat and re-hook the front first to get it good and tight. Then do the sides to get it even (side to side) as you go.
I've always had good results doing them this way.

I had four seats so no loss in cutting one up.
I did similar to Painter - shaved the "hump" where the passenger would sit.
I rode for a while, and shaved some more, making the seat more level.
Then I covered it with some tan material razored from the back of a couch.
The tan doesn't heat up like black would.
Without the hump I can move around - I ride in the middle of the seat.
