Hi I am new here, first post...... I just got my endorsement and found that the XJ bikes have a lot of cool things that can be done to them. I am using my bike as a commuter, but not very far each day.

I am still learning about bikes, I have been messing with cars for years. I just want something to play around with that I can drive.

Which is better to make a cafe/bobber bike 650 or 750? I like the cafe concept a bit better but also have interest in some bobber modifications too.

The reason I ask is I have found a few bikes in my area that are either 650 or 750 maxims, milages vary up to 50k. I just need to know what one to get! Pleas help me decide.

The wife gave me the go ahead and with a cheap bike like this I can have the parts in the mail in no time, and have a fun ride!

    Thanks!

they're the same bike, with a 100cc displacement... i wouldnt however take the 50K bike.

neither are "good" for a cafe or bobber, they dont have a following like an xs650 or cb750... and they're shaft drive.

but if you want cheap, then go for it.

please dont put struts, drag bars, pods, and flat black paint on it and call it a bobber, or clubman bars and a hacked rear seat and call it a cafe racer... most people dont consider it a cafe racer unless you put a triumph motor in a norton feather bed frame, but those guys are pretentious assholes, just dont half ass it like i see so much on here

Cool, I will have to see if I can get the 14K 750 bike. I plan on tasteful modifications. I forgot about the shaft drive in the XJ.

Just do what you feel is right for YOU and don't worry what others think of it. It's YOUR bike and your the one riding it. Make it yours and it doesn't have to be anything to give it a name. "Bobber and "cafe racer" are just terms thrown around here to give a bike a discription of when posting.
If you like, cut off the frame rails, put ape hangers on it or paint it flat black if you like. Make it look like you want it to look like and make neccessary changes to make it comfortable to ride. Only as long as you are happy with it. We're not so much into show bikes here, so ya don't have to worry about winning the forum trophy.

Well I wasn't planning on going to any extremes with the bike, just some fun basic stuff. Maybe a better seat and bars. I saw a crazy bobber style GS Suzuki that was all flat black not really my style.

Exactly. I have an XJ650, and am turning it into a cafe. They actually lend themselves better at being a bobber, given the frame design. either way, do what YOU want and screw what others might say or think.

Easy to turn the Maxim into a Bobber.
Easy to turn a Seca into a Cafe Racer.

Tho opposites are doable but take more effort.
