I may have missed a post covering this topic as there are so many helpful threads, thanks to all.

I'm doing slight mod to my xj650, keeping the original seat but trimming the back down. I need to remove the rear grab bar but it has the lock.

Is there any easy way to lock in the seat and be able to open it back up?

Any suggestions or ways it has been done before would be most appreciated.

a small triangle shaped plate with 3 holes.
turn the seat over on your work bench and put 2 screws in the rear portion with the last hole hanging off enough to access it when you turn it over on the bike.
drill the fender where the last hole is and secure it with a bolt, screw, bubble gum what ever. : )

Does it still have the piece across the rear tire that the seat latches to?

When mine was stock the key on the grab bar was just for locking it. The seat stayed down locked or not with a tab under the tank and two hooks into the metal above the fender.

I'd get a pic for you but that's all long gone.

Excellent suggestions. The original piece across is still in place, as well as the lever on the sit. I might get a heavy spring and hook it down that way. I will see how it looks.

Again your ideas are great guys, it all brain storming for me and I quite possibly might bring them all together
