I'd like to get a higher mph speedo for my 82 xj650, but I'm not sure which models would have had one or what would fit. Any ideas?

No one "needs" a higher mph speedometer. How fast do you expect to go? Is this a racing machine? If so you don't need a speedo on the track. The stock speedo exceeds any known speed limit.

    Horsefeathers.

    One way is a "transplant:"

The actual instrument itself came from (I believe) an XJ900; only slight modification was necessary to drop it into my cluster.

I like how the speedo needle and tach needle are now at pretty much the same relative radial postion in top gear; like in my car.

It is pretty. I can see why you may want one, but I still don't think its needed as the topic states.

definitely looks much better then those 85 mph units in the early 80s. Think they went back to higher ones about 83 or so if i am correct. My 85 is 135 stock. I have a 150 but see no need for it

My 550 Maxim speedometer goes to 140 MPH or 220 KPH. Never been that fast on a bike.

Right. But the USA-market bikes came with 85mph speedos. When I'm coming up to a corner, at "somewhere" above 80mph, I'd like to know how much over 80 I'm going, not have to slow down until I get back into the speedo's "range."

Besides, I like having the needles moving in unison in top gear, like I said.

Didn't realize the US bikes came with a speedo so low. Just figured they would be the same range without the KPH reading on it.

I was an attempt to get us to all drive 55mph during the first "gas crisis." Thankfully, the regulation only lasted from September of '79 through October of '81. (Passed as a result of the 1973 fuel crisis. Gotta love the Fed's timeliness.) But since Yamaha built most of their '81-'83 bikes from the same parts, it hung around a bit longer than actually required. MOST '83 M/Y bikes escaped it, except those that were using "earlier" speedos, like the 550s.

Mine goes to 999. I've not gone that fast though.

There's a track that allows public access and runs courses on high speed riding near here but I'm in my sixties and my reflexes aren't what they used to be. I have been very fast in my younger, foolish days but now I prefer a leisurely ride on a twisting scenic route.

There was a time, when the bike and I were younger, that I made a point of getting my Norton up over 100mph at least once a season. While it probably will still do it, I won't.

Do it to that old bike, that is.

That's what I have an XJ for.

    LOL I like your comment.

My friends have newer bikes and they are always amazed that Im always right behind them and sometimes when I feel enthusiastic in front of them.
    XJ's are quick and fast.

Okay, I don't NEED a higher mph speedo, but I WANT one! I think it's perfectly reasonable for my speedo to display at least my bike's max mechanical capability which I understand is in the 120mph range. And I regularly exceed "known speed limits" That's why I got a bike in the first place and man is it fun!
