Im not entirely certain of what i need, but the exhaust on my '81 550 is just the chrome tubes without baffles/end caps on them. This means it's really loud, and runs a bit rough (pressure issue from no baffles?).

So, what do I need, and where can i get it without spending an arm and a leg?

I can get pics/video of roughness if needed.

Couple of questions. Do you have a 550 Maxim or Seca? Do you only have the headpipes? If this is the case you will need the collector and the two mufflers.

    I have a maxim.
It's got the stock 2 to 4 exhaust.
On both sides it's just the full chrome tubes without anything in them.

Do you know if this would cause some rough performance?

Explain please. Is the collector box (under the bike, the head pipes connect to it) still there? Or do you just have the four header pipes running open?

That being said, rough running could be a number of other things.

Valve adjustment, carbs-- does it have the stock airbox or "pod" filters or ???

These motors are complex little precision instruments; there are a lot of factors involved in getting them running smoothly.

Yes, it has the collector box underneath (so thats what that is called :)

It has the stock airbox with a fresh filter. Just recently cleaned & synced carbs thoroughly. Im not entirely familiar with valve adjustments. Searched for a thread on the subject without avail.

When i had the carbs apart for cleaning and then syncing, the one thing i didn't do was adjust the idle mixture screws. Should that be tuned up as well?

I essentially need to get the bike road worthy again. PO didn't take care of it.

Looking inside the exhaust pipes, this is what i see.

Looking under the bike, this is what i believe you're talking for the collection box.

Still looking to find some exhaust baffles, perhaps other parts. If anyone has them or knows an inexpensive replacement, i would appreciate it.
