    Smoking Engine (video)

Put on a new exhaust. Thoroughly cleaned the carbs. Set the float levels. New air filter. New spark plugs.

The bike is running now, and I'm ready to hook up a manometer to sync the carbs up but first I need to "bring the bike up to normal operating temperature."

When it started smoking, I thought it was just Kroil that I had used on the exhaust studs burning off the front of the engine. But on closer inspection it looks like it's coming from the whole left side of the engine. Any thoughts?

I'd check the valve cover for leaks. They tend to run down and hit the exhaust. Left side of course :D .

I don't see any oil around the valve cover. Any other ideas?

I'd say it's coming from exhaust under the engine, or possibly from the alternator?

Kinda looked like it was coming from that area.

Would it look like this if there was a blown gasket?

    A blown what gasket?

It looks to me like the bike spent a lot of time on the sidestand; and minor oil leaks from the valve cover (and anywhere else, like the cam chain tensioner-to-cylinder block gasket) all accumulated on the left side of the motor. The smoke looks like it's coming off the head, from the spark plug galleries,as well as off the bottom of the cylinder block below the carbs. You've probably had a leaky valve cover at some point, as well as some other seepage.

You need to get the motor and surrounding areas nice and clean; otherwise if you do have a leak you won't find it.
